Hello guys,

Recently got into water chemistry and enjoying it, weirdly... My main reasoning for entering this slightly daunting process was to get my mash pH correct. So far, I have been using the 'EZ Water Calc' and found it both very good and accurate.

I've played around with the 'Brewer's Friend Mash Chemistry and Brewing Water Calculator' and also the 'Bru'n Water Calculator' - but found fairly large discrepancies between the three regarding lactic acid mash additions to hit target pH. The thing is, I know that 'EZ Water Calc' is accurate because it's the one I've actually brewed with - but that can't make the others wrong as surely folk wouldn't use them?

Considering a target pH of 5.25, here's what the calculators suggest for a mash addition:

EZ Water - 7.4ml

Brewer's - 6.35ml

Bru'n Water - 4.4ml

I understand they're estimates and I'm likely splitting hairs, but I'm curious as to why the discrepancies, more so with Bru'n water - it's almost like it's WAY off? If I mashed with 4.4ml as according to Bru'n Water, then my mash would have a pH of 5.48. Although still in range, it's a good way off 5.25...

Any experience with these calculators, personal preference and/or observations?

Cheers!
