I got my bottle of vinegar off the top shelf to put on some chips yesterday (we don't use it very often so i haven't a clue how long its been there) and to my surprise there was what i can only describe as a big lump of brown snot in the bottle, i was going to bin it but i have just read its called a "vinegar mother" and is harmless, you can strain the vinegar or just use it as it is.

Has anyone else seen or heard of this?

So if you buy the bog standard stuff from a shop and leave it long enough you will get one in every bottle. :-?

I just googled vinegar mother and got this, unfortunately mine does not look anything like that.

Yep, I had about a liter of left over beer when bottling one day so I put it in a sanitised mason jar with a spoonful of mother from cider vinegar and it made some rather delicious malt vinegar which I use for pickling chillies.
