I recently bought some Videne antiseptic solution from a local chemist, I read that it is none rinse but there is a strong smell of iodine left in the demi/fv is this normal?

I have been using it at 1.5ml per litre and been leaving it for 10 minutes, is that incorrect ?

Oh just one more thing this is the right stuff right :wha:

Cheers Guys

Out of interest:

1. How much does this stuff cost? (cheaper than the alternatives?)

2. Although it is no rinse, do you have to leave stuff upside down to drain off and dry before brewing? Seems a bit strange that you can effectively drink the stuff, even though I know it will be incredibly diluted.

Thanks :thumb:

I got 2 bottles delivered last year from an on-line jobbie, I just searched google for Videne, cost was about £9 delivered.
I just use 1L in a demijohn or 1Gal in a FV (full demijohn) and use 1.25/5ml in the mix.
Shake it up and pour it out (or into a container if I am going to use it again shortly). No rinse or leaving to dry. Never noticed any off favours or tastes from using it.

If you dispense through a 1Ltr spray bottle like the ones available from Wilkinsons or the pound shop! and screw the nozzle down you will get an even and fine mist which is very effective. If you don't have one you can swill the solution around and pour the excess out of containers of immerse other bits and leave to drain. Don't worry too much about a little residue on your equipment it really doesn't affect the finished product,

Don't be tempted to wipe any treated areas with a cloth no matter how clean.

I used an online pharmacy, got two bottles delivered for around £13.

The stuff is amazing. And I can see two bottles lasting me months, possibly years!!!

Thank you for all your replies :thumb: :D

Although there is no effect to the taste, how about the health risk of drinking it? Even though it's diluted.

Have to say after reading the label and it stating "for topical use" it has got me thinking, I'm no pharmacologist or toxicologist so I was just wondering how do people know this is safe?

I can see the point about the dilution but I'm still not sure I would fancy drinking bleach no matter how diluted, I appreciate that there is chlorine in tap water already but I know that has been tested and 'deemed safe' .

I was just wondering if anyone could clarify please :) ?

you don't have to use videne, use something from the LHBS if you prefer, or use bleach if you are happy to spend the tiem to rinse it out several times. There is a long thread on this forum regarding videne, search for it (it may be called 'videne - is it really that simple?' but i'm not sure) and you will see the arguments for and against it's use.

I thought it was interesting that mashman (bottom of page 4) e-mailed the manufacturer to enquire about its use in homebrewing, and their reply was:
"We are aware that our product Videne Antiseptic Solution is used for this purpose but because the product is licensed and this application is not listed on the SPC unfortunately we can not offer any advice for this use."
If we were using the product in a manner which was ill advised or potentially unsafe, that company would surely have a Duty of Care to advise against or try to prevent us from using it, but their answer was simply “yes, we know you're doing it”. To my mind, what they didn't say told us all we needed to know.
