I realise a number of home brewers use Videne as a no rinse sanitiser although I haven't used it myself yet...

I have been searching the manufacturers web sites and safety data sheets etc trying to find where using Videne is recommended for use, as a long term use, no rinse sanitiser and cant seem to find it . Can someone please post a link to some manufacturers site or data covering it's use in this application. I.e. science based information not home brew forum or my mates been using it for years type links

Certainly reading the Manufacturers SAFETY DATA SHEET on Videne it's not something you want to be regularly consuming even in small doses as it's mildly bioaccumulable and builds up in your system. It cant be disposed of down drains and sinks as it's damaging to aquatic life...

Already had that as per my original post that's the Manufacturers SAFETY DATA SHEET I was referring to although that's for the surgical scrub, the antiseptic solution is:

I also only currently use VWP or Youngs and rinse multiple times.

For the data you want you need to look at the active ingredient Povidone Iodine. A check on Google brings up quite a few interesting articles and data sheets. But from a quick look I didn't see any specific to homebrew. But don't forget the use in homebrew application is greatly diluted from the manufactured product.

I have recently come across a product called Steribev (http://www.brewfitt.com/). It claims to have a lot of the features your post suggests you are looking for, safe to humans and the natural environment.

I switched to videne from VWP but I still rinse and air dry. The rinsing used to be the longest part of preping bottles before I made a simple bottle rinser from copper piping with plastic tubing on the spouts. Does 6 in one go very quickly :thumb:

Thanks for that, their SteriBev product does look quite interesting and the MSDS seems to read as safer than Videne...

I have had some correspondence with the company checking on availability and cost incl. carriage. They have already said they are keen to sell to the HB community so I'm sure your interest will be welcomed. I have a lot of Starsan left so have not ordered any myself but certainly will when it's finished. If their claims are accurate then it will solve most if not all the problems associated with alternatives. Try Katie Hughes, [email protected]

i use videne but still give everything a good rinse, just habit i guess

me too, just can't quite help myself

Which then presumably leaves a deposit of any "nasties" present in the water, though with the amount of chlorine smell from our water probably nothing to worry about. Anyone on here with some water science based info to the contrary?
