Anyone noticed any increase in homebrew prices? Grain, hops, equipment etc....?

Ok, who wants to do some sums with me?

A beer kit costs £14.99 with VAT at 17.5%
VAT is cut to 15%
That beer kit is cut to £14.67 and we all think “whoopie-doo, a bargain”
Over the next month or two it gradually creeps back to £14.99

VAT goes back up to 17.5%
Beer kit goes from £14.99 to £15.31
Retailer says “hey, ain't my fault”, and we accept it because we knew it was coming.
By the end of that month, beer kit has crept up to £15.49
The following month it sneaks up to £15.99 and because it's still under sixteen quid no-one bats an eyelid.

VAT goes from 17.5% to 20%
Beer kit goes from £15.99 to £16.33
Retailer says “hey, ain't my fault”, and we accept it because we knew it was coming.
By the end of that month, beer kit has crept up to £16.49
The following month it sneaks up to £16.99

VAT has effectively gone up 2.5% overall but the product's gone up two quid.

Cynical, moi?

Add in seasonal price increases as well. My mane supplier has increased prices by 6% which I will have to add on. But hey my turnover should increase by 6% as well. He he he.

And Moley you are not cynical just just perhaps good at 'creative accounting'

I do a very fine range of framed Tibetan horse hair tapestries.

One cannot communicate with you without occasionally leaving a spelling or grammatical error to goad you with

Cheers

It wouldn't be so bad if there was a bit of competition. But all of the kits that I see on the shelf come out of the same factory.

Sorry, I've got to disagree with you, there are two factories. Cooper's kits are shipped over from Oz, everything else is made by Munton's.

I thought Brupak made their own kits.

That was a sweeping generalisation and intended to be rather tongue in cheek..

I don't know the first thing about Brupaks kits and have never brewed, or possible even seen one. However, I'm pretty certain that my own LHBS (who stock a fairly wide range of one and two can kit beers) carry nothing outside of that previous generalisation, and I was referring to what would be regarded as mass market kits.

Actually not so sweeping. Muntons make something like 90% of the kits produced in the UK and something like 95-96% of the malt extract used in kits in the UK. The remaining very small production is guarded very secretly by those retailers that use them in their own kits. . . .Like Heart Of England Design a Beer Kits. . . . The volume both in terms of production and sales of those kits is tiny compared to Muntons, Edme, Milestone Woodfordes, St Peters etc. . . .Coopers is indeed I believe still produced in Australia and shipped over here.

VAT this goverment will have us on the bones ov our arses :x

Its not this goverment thats costing us our livelihoods, Its every government since 1971 when all this sh*t started, we had bugger all debt in 1971 now we have trillions of pounds in debt, a pile of £50 notes piled one on top of the other 6500 Miles High

The cuts the current government are putting in place and the vat rise will solve feck all, they are taking a teaspoon to shovel a pile of **** the size of the millenium dome, that Godzillas adding to daily.

The only way they will ever clear the debt is to go back to pre welfare state pre NHS etc etc times.

The current politicians are borrowing money off people who have yet to be born, so expect things to get a damn site worse than they currently are.

& If labour get back in in 4 years or so sell your house and emigrate asap, cos they fix things by spending spending spending with no worries of how to pay it back.
