Vanilla pods

I've seen a few recipes that use vanilla pods. None of my local supermarkets sell them. Can anyone tell me where I can get them from?

The larger supermerarkets should have them. Failing that you could use extract or essence (extract is better IMHO). What are you trying to make?

I bought mine from Tesco, but I know they're also stocked in my local Morrisons. They should be in the herbs and spices section.

extract is much better, essence is a chemical that tastes like vanilla and nothing to do with vanilla.

go to your local asian specialist if you have one. supermarkets charge a ridiculous price for it.

Just about to stock vanilla pods. We packed them up on Friday, 5 pods vac packed in the same foil we use for the hops. They were seriously sticky, not like the ones you buy in the shops at all, smelled amazing. They are part of a whole new range of beer flavourings and spices that will all be listed later this week including bitter orange peel, star anise, liquorice and lots of different curry spices for beer or cooking. We will be expanding the range so if there is something that you use let me know and we can look to get it.

I want to make a coffee wine. I made it years ago from a recipe from a library book (yes that long ago) :lol: As I recall it asked for a vanilla pod but in those days you could only get essence. We do have a couple of asian supermarkets, Morrisons and Tesco but I have never found them in their. Maybe I need to look harder

Lidl sometimes have them in on a special offer, I got a pack of 2 madagascan vanilla pods for £1.49 in lidl a little while ago....much cheaper than the £5 odd my local tesco charges :) Worth checking to see if they are in a lidl near you :)

You could try the Wholefood shops too, though they tend to be expensive.

£1.69, really not that bad, although probably not as good as buying them from a local Asian or specialist food store.
