Does anyone have any experience/opinions of the differences between using value kettle elements versus 'proper' elements designed for immersion heaters/wall mounted heaters from somewhere like the heating element company?

The reason I ask is because of the massive difference in price - £20 each for the pigtail elements, and £5ish each for value kettles. Is there a massive difference between the two? I don't mind spending a bit more money to do things properly, but I don't see any sense in wasting money needlessly.....

I have used kettle elements, but on my next brewery I am going to probably use the pig tail elements that aleman has used. Kettle elements are designed for short boiling times and not the 90 mins we do. Having said that I haven't had much problem with then except them furring up and cutting out mid boil.

I have been using kettle elements for the past 15+ years with no problems in my boilers.
As stated above the only real issue is if you let them get furred up with beer stone, but I assume this will be the same on an immersion element as well ?

These "value" kettles have only been with us for a few years and are basically the same as more expensive ones but made in China to keep costs down.
Given that my current boiler has had the same elements in it for the past 5+ years I don't think they are really an issue. (although they are the old Swan type)

Granted, you only need make small holes for the pigtail elements which is easier (and you won't need an expensive hole-saw or punch).
I've had no problems with budget kettle elements failing on me in about 35 brews or so. Provided the 'safety cut-out' is disabled and they're de-scaled occasionally they seem to be fine. Bear in mind, if you let them boil dry with safety cut out disabled they will self-destruct, melting the plastic gubbins housing the switch, (and your brewing vessel if it is plastic).

With Value Kettle Elements you need to make your own cover.

'Proper' elements from backer you can either buy a new locknut or ask a forum member to make you a cover like this...
