As DME/spraymalt is so expensive would it be posiible to mash a few pounds of grain then just drain the mash tun and use the runnings to make starters it works out cheaper than using DME etc.

I would have thought you'd need to boil it :hmm:

I have been thinking of keeping some wort from a brew and freezing some in batches for making starters. Much cheaper and less hassle

This is a great way to make a starter, but yes it will need a 10-15 minute boil to kill all the rogue bugs living in the wort.

The only drawback is the shelf life of the starter wort is very short. If you are going to use this method be sure to use the wort quickly.

DME is expensive? I pay 5.00 USD per pound. We use 2 cups per starter.

Thats a good idea. When you're brewing you could fill a couple of 500ml bottles from the mash & stick them in the freezer for future use.

I recently mashed some malt to grow wlp 002 on. Only 2 litres but while boiling I thought I'd add 10g galaxy for the last 6 mins. The resulting 3 bottles of beer I have is some of the best beer I've ever brewed! I'll certainly be doing a 5 gal batch now with just pale malt and 100g galaxy for 6 mins. That is all.
