Hi everyone, this is my first post on here and just after a bit of advise.......

I've recently purchased some StarSan to sanitise my fermenter etc..... had problems in the past with using other sanitisers ie vwp. This was prob down to me not rinsing properly.

I've also got a 5 litre container of deionised water which i want to use with the StarSan to make my sanitising solution.

How much Star San should i use?

I've done a quick workout and i think i shold use about 7.5 to 8 ml. Is this about right.

I tried about 7.5ml in a 5lt bottle of cheap spring water, but it went cloudy straight away. My tap water went like milk when i tried it.

Many thanks guys for any help you can give.

I have just logged in to ask a similar question.

Our lovely American friends are confusing me with their US gallons and fl oz's!

I will be using in a spray bottle. Could some one suggest a non rinse solution starsan / 100ml? I am not making up a huge batch just for a spray sanitiser.
D

"The recommended usage is one fluid ounce per 5 gallons of water."

1 US fl.oz. = 30ml.
5 US gallons = 19 litres (& 4.16 UK gallons).

So ~1.6ml of Starsan to 1 litre water.
Or, ~7.5ml Starsan to 1 UK Gallon of water.

Sound about right?

Thanks for that, will def use 7.5ml

I don't know what halfords charge for their deionised water but tescos ashbeck mineral water works fine with starsan and is about 92p for 5 litres.

Hi,
I use Starsan and it is 1ml per litre of water with all my brewing kit - nothing's been infected yet, but I may be wrong and extremely lucky.
Whilst we're on the topic, Usually I rinse my bottles in a mild bleach bath. With Starsan I was hoping on trying to just rinse with water and then swilling one bottle to the next with Starsan for all my bottles - anyone else doing this :hmm: ?

Good item JagCrusher, and very enlightening - answered all the questions in one - I will revise my concentration to 1.6ml/1l, and I will swill from one bottle to the next when I'm next sanitising without worrying too much about traces being left in the bottles. I stand corrected and I am greatful of your item :thumb:

I rinse my bottles three times in warm water after pouring the beer, then place top back on and store. When brewing I take the bottles rinse three times in warm water and allow to drain, I then use a spray gun filled with tap water and Star San using 1.5ml Star San and 1l of tap water, I then shake the bottle to ensure that the solution touches every part of the inside of the bottle (i also give the bottle tops and the top of the outside of the bottle a few quick sprays) then place upturned on a drainer (sprayed with star san).

I have done between 25 and 50 kits and so far I have only had one problem but I associate that to my storing in the cold rather than an infection.

Hope this helps.
