Using campden tablets with a kit

If I want to use campden tablets to remove chlorine with a beer kit, how should I add the tablets (or half tablet)? Do I need to treat all 23 litres in a separate container first? Or could I put, say, 10L water in the FV and add the half tablet to that before pouring in the kit and then topping up to 23L?

How long does it take to remove the chlorine and chloramine? Does it have to be left for a while in which case you probably have to treat all the water at once?

Finally, since the quantity for a standard 23L brew is half a tablet, why don't homebrewers use campden powder instead? Or do the tablets work out cheaper? - it's difficult to do a comparison.

morning , when i brew i just crush up half a tab and chuck it in moments before using the water , i guess using hot/warm water helps dissolve it and then water gets boiled but i've no idea when using kits with it .

no need if your using bottled water. If your using tap water pour into a container and add half a tablet. It works almost at once so the water can be used to make your brew straight away.
If your water smells of chlorine ( swimming bath water ) do it the day before and let it stand overnight with a few stirs.

At 17p for 2 litres i use tesco value still bottled water. Never had a problem. Added bonuses are the batch of pet bottles in case your running low on better bottles but also much easier to fill an fv from a bottle than sodding about with a jug and tap.

Tablets are easier, especially when dealing with such small quantities. That's the only difference as far as I can see.
