Hello all

Just a quick thought/question.

I'm about to use DME for the first time and am planning to add a certain amount post boil. Obviously aware of clumping etc so wondered whether there is any negative effect/s of using a sanitized blender to mix/dissolve (DME & water mix and a blitz).

Thanks in advance

No, actually if you cool the main wort down to 18º or so and add a part afterwards, blended, that part will be very foamy and I expect the yeast to thrive on that.

My negative effect would be spraying it all over the kitchen: I'm not good with blenders :laugh8:

Cheers GerritT. So your tip is to put the lid on the blender.... Noted.. Haha.. Yeah was thinking the additional aeration would be a possible positive element to the task....

If anyone else knows any scientific reason not to do this please advise...

I don't see any potential for harm and a blender will help oxygenate the wort. I don't know about DME but sugar will dissolve in cold water without agitation. I filled a jar with 50/50 sugar and cold water and the sugar had all dissolved overnight. Now, when I do kits, I put the malt extract in a hot sink for 20 minutes and rinse the tins or bags with hot tap water. I add about 10 litres of hot tap water and find the LME is all mixed in within a minute's stirring. I top up with ice-cold, Scottish tap water and then put my FV in a bigger FV with an aquarium heater. I keep refilling the outer container with cold water (using a siphon to empty) and pitch when the wort reaches about 24. My heater is set to 22/23 as I know the wort will produce quite a lot of heat.

I have used one of the hand held blenders with the whisk attachment.

As I do partial mashes, I would whisk the DME into 5 litres or so of cold water in the fermenting bucket before I adding the wort from my 15 litre stock pot.

when making a brew comprising a LME (can) + DME + brewing sugar mix, I found that dry-miixng the DME with an equal quantity of brewing sugar made it much easier to dissolve with less (not zero) clumping. I put hot water in the FV straight from the kettle and sprinkled the sugar/DME mx in while stirring like billy-o, as if making plaster; then added the can LME and rinsed out with more hot water, then topped up with clod water to suit.
