i've used bread yeast to brew a mead.

No, Baltic Stout maybe.
I used the W34/70 because I was sure it would give me the results I wanted at the temperature I had to ferment the batch.

No, like a stout. My previous batch was a Dunkel and they do not taste alike.

W-34/70 is about the most versatile and forgiving yeast I've ever come across. Apart from Allinsons Easy Bake that is.
