Hi, Im new to brewing and i currently have 40 pints of larger brewing, its currently the second day and its looking hopefull. The nearest brew shop for me is like 35 miles away, i dont drive so its a problem to get brewers sugar. (everything else is available at wilkinsons, typical) I have heard that Lyle's Golden Syrup can be used instead of standard granualted sugar (sucrose), has anyone used golden syrup in their wort mixtures? and is it used the same as brewers sugar?

My recipe calls for 1Kg of Sugar so could i use 1Kg of Golden Syrup? or it is a bit more complicated than that?

Regards
SS

What I do when using Golden Syrup is.

1/2 way through the boil, drain off 2L of wort add syrup and boil on stove to dissolve, and then return it to boiler. :thumb:

sugar is about 370 degrees/kg/L and Golden Syrup is about 320 deg/kg/L so you can reduce the amount proportionally if you like but it won't make a great deal of difference proportionally, ie. it won't ruin the brew.

Honey is often used too, gives an interesting flavour. Don't quote me but I think golden syrup is sucrose rather than glucose but it works too. Experiment, thats what its all about :)

I think the guys have given you the jist. :thumb:

You probably want to add around 15%-20% in weight when using Invert Sugar instead of plain White Sugar. So instead of 1kg you will need around 1.2kg.

I Have just brewed a coopers lager using 1 tin of golden syrup and 600 gram of normal sugar, have also used bottled still water to replace tap.I have the brew ready to go into my corny tomorrow to be carbonated, will tell you how it turns out ( had a taste without any co2 and tastes OK to me) :D

cool thanks for the advice!! i shall experiment in a week or two when ever my first batch has decided its finished fermenting! im worried because the sucrose could give it a cidery taste, and im not too fond of cider, meh, shall see how it goes!!

Just to let you know..The brew went down very well at my halloween party...Looks like i will be brewing another coopers with golden syrup :D  :thumb:
