Writing my university application to study Brewing and Distilling as a course at Herriot Watt University in Edinburgh next year.

Any suggestions of stuff I can put in the personal statement that will impress the selection comitee? ;)

Well what personal stuff have you got to tell them? Are you brewing all grain? have you worked in a micro brewery?

They will be obviously looking for people who are dedicated to the subject but unfortunately if it is such a specialist course then you would expect everyone already is.

I applyed for this when I was applying to uni and got accepted straight into second year but got persaded by my family to do chemistry instead but on the up I did meet my wife to be at uni.

Talk about your passion for brewing how you want to know every detail from the affect of the grain bill to the different flavours from the yeast.

Are you only applying for HW? I only ask because you may want to make it more of a general statment.

My big bro did Chemistry at HW many many moons ago so was friends with loads of the guys on the brewing and distilling course - they shared a lot of lectures in the first couple of years I think.

It seems to have been, and still is, a very well respected qualification. (and a bit of a hoot too...)

As grays says, a potted history of your craft brewing/winemaking experience is likely to go down well, any experience of the retail side of things (pub work?) and supply side (arable farming, horitculture, selective breeding) is also going to be useful I guess.

Best of luck getting in! Do keep us abreast of your studies, I reckon you'll have a blast!

Mention your involvement with craft brewing in the wider community and the many and varied discussions you have taken part in.

(That would be chatting with us 'orrible lot about bulls testicle beer too  )

Include details about any and all equipment you have made as part of an "experimental craft brewery" ;)

You already know the technical terms for brewing, but each University has buzz words that are a good way to get ahead. Play buzzword bingo :D

For example: "I utilise an experimental micro-brewery (XMB) to interpret commercial beers into a craft beer setting"
