@IainM I like your point. The whole cameras and youtube and instagram channels everywhere means I'd have ruined my life (socially!) when I started being a drunkard in school days!

I wonder if yet another factor - at least down here in the south - is that so many young people are living at home until they're... well several of my friends were until late 20s and even into 30s (i'm/we're 35 ish). I know most of them feel coming home drunk wouldn't be acceptable. It didn't stop me when I was young, but at 16-18 it didn't seem that important as you're still a child! Then I buggered off to Welsh uni = cheap beer. Then I got a job in a consultancy = free beer!

The sad thing about your quote is that it is quite probably true.... at least in the feeble minds of today's indoctrinated youth. They really need to get out more instead of wallowing in, and believing the crapola they read on the 'net.

They can't afford it that's why. You can't really enjoy a pint at a fiver a pop and many don't like the cheaper pubs coz they're full of old blokes getting pissed and watching horses.

They're turning to other drugs instead.... So it's not quite the wonderful news they'd have us think I reckon.

Instead of the drug of choice been booze, around here at least it's now the various types of marijuana. Young people literally walk down the street smoking it.

are these two connected ? I know the cost of a pint , and yes in one or two establishments it stings if you buy a round. what I don't know is what the average cost of a joint or a couple of pills is ? neither do I know what the difference is in mind altering effects compared to 8 pints of bitter !

I grew up drinking in Young farmers Clubs, who have reputation for excessive beer consumption! I have a few friends who are ' a generation below' in young farmers , and they simply arnt interested in consuming as much beer as possible before closing time, yet they still want to have a laugh , party dance etc but do it all on coke* . (edit * read pepsi / cokeacola etc!!) , I find this pleasantly refreshing , if not a bit puzzling !

I progressed to agricultural collage where I embarked on a real 'education' in drinking beer !

They only had two "drugs" that were readily available in my youth and they were "Alcohol" and "Nicotine"!

I loved them both; and still do even though I gave up Nicotine over 10 years ago.

I don't think the youth of today are taking drugs to replace alcohol; but I do believe that they don't drink alcohol because many of them are taking drugs in place of alcohol.

Drugs are VERY easy to by in this area, especially if you are under age, where alcohol is a lot more difficult than it once was. Plus, fact is the youngsters around here are growing up seeing their parents smoking drugs (and, to be quite blunt, drinking gallons of Stella), so just continue the trend. This isn't an area where the under 25s are drinking less that's for sure.... But then, it is an area with high unemployment and not much hope for the young folks.

There was a discussion on this in secret cask the other day, both parts of social media were mentioned (don't need to meet people and don't want drunken pics on the net) and it was the 1st time I thought about drunks, I have never seen any recent evidence but many there think its a big cause. I remember when I was a teenager there was a group of people who all thought drinking alcohol was far to much hassle compared to smoking something or taking a pill which even then was similar in price or cheaper.
