I wonder if they've really thought this through in terms of production time? I mean, it's not exactly like baking is it where you get your results there and then.

There won't be a drinkable product (well, certainly a competative product) for a couple of months after brewday... Lots longer if anyone does a lager.

That might explain why it's beer rather than wine. A good elderberry wine might take a decade (or two) before it reaches its best.

This will not be a live program, but I don't know the deadline dates. The researcher told me she would get back to me later this week.

I'm still a bit worried how we will be portrayed. Just hope it's not going to be a p*ss take.

Why don't we put the guy with his instant beer concentrate forward! lol

I'd be prepared to bet that on any day I could produce better beer than that...

...AFTER filtering it through my kidneys!

In fact that little Irish chaps band off The Voice could do the theme tune.

Walking In The Hallertau Of Fame

That would be my worry too.

I used to live in a village which had an annual vegetable competition that was taken very seriously by many.
There were monetary prizes to win and the top prize with the most money was for show leeks.....IIRC top prize for leeks was £100; quite a considerable sum in the late 70's and early 80's.
For some reason the local paper caught on to the story and did a two page spread where they basically took the piss out of the event and ridiculed our unfortunate neighbour who had agreed to feature in the article.
As an aside, my grandfather won the leek prize many times and would never share the source of his plants even with his two sons (one of them being my father)
I've a great picture of my grandad, dad and uncle when they took the top 3 places one year. The leeks were virtually inedible by the way; a true show variety.

Yup. If it were competition between home brewers, as it is competition between amateur bakers in The Great British Bake Off or amateur chefs in Masterchef, then I'd be comfortable with it.

We don't even know if it'll be like for like - for example I'd find it fun to go against Watt and Dickie of Brewdog or some of the other craft outfits because we'd be playing the same game and they'd have the understanding of what homebrewing seeks to achieve but I have a feeling the "experts" will be from mega-corps brewers and that just seems pointless as the two, as we know, are incomparable.

it sounds like it could be an fantastic experience and probably the foot in the door of pro' brewing some homebrewers are looking for.

im certainly interested but expect having only brewed kits they are looking for all grain brewers.

Just to clear this up it will in fact be a TV series in the style of The Great British Bake Off with a great prize for the winner! It is an entirely positive experience for the home brewers who take part who are willing to show they can produce better beer / wine / cider than well known brands!

Does sound like it could be very positive :thumb:

Just a shame you have to be on the telly

Ah... so it's head to head brewing against fellow homebrewers with industry experts doing the running commentary/pieces to camera and judging the resultant brews...

...that sounds a lot more positive!

The other thing that I think should be clarified if you can is what sort of time commitment you would need from the participants? When we consider that brewing a beer takes a whole day effectively, probably three weeks wait until it's ready to bottle then that takes a good couple of hours, then at least another month to condition the beer...

Is it a case of everyone brews one and it's judged? Or are there to be multiple rounds? Can you tell us more about the format (obviously without giving too much away so as to spoil it...) and the filming scheduling?

If people knew roughly what they were letting themselves in for they might be more willing to come forward perhaps... :thumb:

In my case that is certainly true
I've been told my voice is built for radio on a few occasions.
I'm quite interested too, but would like to know more about the time commitment needed as well.
