Hi all,
Been haveing a look round and I dont see a forum which this really fits in but seems closest to wine making. I have seen this turbo year whic say can bew sugar and water to 20% alcohol in 5 - 7 days. and there are essences which can be added to make a vodka / brandy. I just wandered if anyone had tried this and what the results where like ? My guess is that you end up with a very sweet 20% brew am I right ? Im looking to stay legal so im not considering ant still type process but if it tastes like brandy and is 15 - 20% I would be happy.
If you know anything about this please let me know and any guidence would be welcome.

Thanks Alan

I've never tried them myself, but I believe those turbo yeasts will ferment to 25% or above. There's no reason why it should be sweet if you follow the instructions. They produce a very harsh alcohol which then has to be charcoal filtered, before being flavoured with the essences you mention.

Hi

I did one of the alcotec kits a few weeks ago - tried the following essences - peach schnapps (lovely), cheery liquer (lovely), pear (ok) and dark rum (nowt like rum but nice enough). Paid £8.99 for the kit, essences were £1.90 each and made 6 bottles altogether. Planing to get another couple done over the next few weeks to get stocked up for Xmas. The kits vere very easy to make and instructions were crystal! :drink:

Thanks, Very useful, I have ordered some turbo yeast but I might just buy a kit to give it a go with. How long before this is drinkable ? which filters did you use to smooth out the alcohol ?

Thanks Alan

Hi
It took 4 weeks from start to drinking!
The kit did not need filtering as you get an activated carbon pack with it to clear the mix. I was very sceptical as after you add this your demijohn will look like a gallon of ink, but within an hour you can see it start to clear from the top. 3 days bottle it, just be careful near the bottom of the dj though.

I was thinking of seeing if I could find a yeast that would go to 20+% alcohol. I was hoping to make a vanilla almost spirit thingy. Might this be possible?

Al co etc easily produces 21%alcoholle and ferments down to a FG of around 980,however the final product from myexperiencee has seemed very harsh and seemed to have a strange taint to it an almost vinegary smell but without the taste.
The important thing is keeping the room tempreture between 18 and 21 c.As some one else has all ready said it gets very hot on its own.

Cheers Graham.

Graham,
How did you drink yours ? I intend to try some of the flavoring essences. Just wonder what you had used and hw close you thought it tasted ? I have read some reviews and some site of kits and they seem to get pretty good feedback. I guess really its down to the indiviuals taste. Im not expecting it to turn in to jack daniels but as long as it tastes ok and is drinkable without causing major head aches then im happy. One of the reviews said if you used to drinking super market own brands and dont mind them then these kits are as good just less alcohol.

Thanks Alan
