and I don't mean to the shops

Holidays - the travel bug - you know what I mean?

I've recently lost the travel bug.

After many years of globe trotting for leisure (New Zealand 3 times in that last decade, Bermuda and the US 2 to 3 times a year for a while, been to Africa, China etc) I've finally had enough of the travel :(

I get SO hacked of with the airlines for a start - a charge to PAY you?? - a charge to carry a suitcase?? - and the blasted security queues, the boarding queues, the stupid 'arrive 4 hours before your flight' nonsense, the cramped seats, the jetlag - SOD IT ALL!!!!

Give me time at home, with all the home comforts, and I can treat myself to some nice food and drink - or maybe drive to friends and treat us all to some nice food and drink :drink: :drink:

Must admit I'm inclined to agree with you :!: we dislike airports and all the buggering around that goes with them

Mrs wants to try a cruise, so she can have her holiday abroad and avoid the airports

Know what you mean mate, I spent four years doing worldwide field service/installation. From hurricanes in Taiwan, to the "customs" in Siberia (BA said my luggage will follow through, Russian customs had other ideas (Luckily it was only for 3 days and I could buy some local clothes).

For past 17 years I haven't been out of the country, don't miss the cramped flights and costly extras. But saying that I enjoyed it while I was doing it, Moscow in December is "interesting" (Was in '89 just before the McD opened) -20dec C with same in wind chill, 3' drifts of snow on Red Sq ... (and the only thing to drink was 330ml cans of Heineken until we went to the Irish Theme Pub  )
Then again Germany was fun, drinking real Lager by the Liter

I find google street view a good way to travel. Except I get major de ja vu when I get there.

Travel is for us something we have done and also something we look forward to.

Before we were married/had kids we had a few European holidays and lots of trips to the carribean - mostly to chill but also for the sport fishing.

At the moment with two young daughters long haul flights are not happening so mallorca is great when we can afford to get there!

We hope to go to the south of france in a year or two on a driving camping holiday.

Then when the kids are old enough to take it all in, we want to explore the rest of the world with them  Give our kids a slice of the worldly experience they need before we let them go explore alone.

The moment that mrs wez and I both look forward to though is when we can cuddle up on a sofa here in this village with the fire on and get a txt from one of the girls telling us about the bits we missed when we took them away!

I haven't been abroad for 18 yrs (except Ireland) and that was work   .

I spent all my holidays as a kid stuck in airport departure lounges :nono: :nono: , all I wanted to do was go camping in the lakes or go to North Wales. My wife and I decided many years ago that there are to many beautiful places in this country to see and you can travel under your own steam (mind you Manchester to Somerset to 7.5 hrs this summer).

So for the moment I am quite happy finding a cottage next to the sea, sitting back and relaxing .

I think Baz Chaz has found the perfect cottage

Both MrsC and me love Islay, we rent a remote (and I mean remote :!: ) cottage and watch Golden Eagles and Red Deer from out the back door  its just a magical place :thumb:

Nice one Wez, I'll second that.. our 2 are too small at the moment so we spent our last holiday on a farm in Devon which they loved, but look forward to showing them some of the world when they are a little older. :thumb:

I'm with Tony . . . Love Travel . . . Hate Airports . . . and having to travel cattle class

We have an added complication in that James (mine not B) is on the Autistic Spectrum so airport delays can be . . . . . interesting . . . It was even more fun this year when (despite having paid a supplement for seats together) . . . The handlers at Dalaman put us in 4 seperate areas of the plane . . . We were last to check in . . . We arrived before check in was open . . . and paid extra for seats together :wha: . . . . I really did want for him to throw a real strop . . . never does it when you want him too  . . . . Luckily the flight attendants were more reasonable, and juggled some seats about to get him sat with She.

Now they are 13 and 15 its a lot better than when they were 6 and 9 (When they started coming with us) . . . and at least they get to experience the countries we go and visit, as we are not package tour beach blobs, and go out and explore on our own . . . I'm teaching them Turkish at the moment, so that they can at least say Please, Thank you, Hello . . . As I keep telling them "They'll get you a long way . . . and a lot further than talking very slowly and very loudly" :D

That worked for us as well, in Tunisia we had a couple of fantastic bits to our holiday when we went into a side street cafe in one of the souks and both kids were young .. Al salaam a'alaykum ismi Tom / ismi Emma we were treated 'right royally'

If I had the money I'd be off on a plane tomorrow, but when we do fly I have to pay extra to get bulk head seats cause I can't get me legs in cattle class, so use Seat Guru.

Over the last twelve months though we have just had the odd night away (from the kids) and Mrs Mc finds some great hotels at bargain prices
