So am planning a stout brew reworking a recipe that requires 500g flaked barley... I haven't access to a decent local HBS and am missing this ingredient. I can pop pearl barley to make torrified barley. Will I just be able to substitute like for like and also is there anything that can be done to combat dry flavour imparted?

barley's pretty unique. it adds a haze as well as a mouthfeel. oats or wheat malt can be substituted, but at a loss to the integrity of the recipe.

google tells me that torrified will leave a cereal taste whereas flaked imparts nothing but haze/mouthfeel...but it sounds like it'll work at least.

Go check in your Polish shop, they sometimes stock barley, rye and buckwheat flakes. Even instant Polish flakes can be used safely for brewing.
