I just had a thought... Yes, it did hurt a bit... but if I'm top cropping yeast from a heavily hopped IPA, will the hop flavour carry over to the next brew?
I've got a few inches of krausen that absolutely honk of hops! I don't suppose it'll matter that much as its wlp001 which I use for my hoppy pales. But food for thought..?

It is the very healthy yeast in the krausen, but it also honking of Amarillo and Citra! :-D

Are they not the aromas coming off the brew as it ferments ? either way crop the yeast and then smell it if it has caught some aromas I am sure it will be fine, it won't be full of hop trub though so it should be pretty clean.

You could have a crack at top cropping WLP001 but it's not really a top cropping strain. You want something that throws up several inches of krausen really.

Hop trub? Trub is complexed proteins (along with your carrageenan finings) from grain. Hop particulates will have dropped out and settled below your cold break 'trub' in your FV.
