I've recently started using Videne as a no rinse steriliser at 1.25ml/litre, but I've just realised that when I bottled some WOW on the weekend I accidentally did 1.25ml/500ml.

I left the bottles drip dry on a bottle tree before filling them, but I'm a bit worried that I've poisoned the wine. Especially as I've given one away as a birthday present, and another will be given away to a charity raffle in around a month!

Have I ruined it all?

I would be more concerned about poisoning the recipient rather than ruining the wine!

I have read that 2.5ml per litre is acceptable when used as a no rinse steraliser.

As an aside, I think there are some rules about raffling home brew when you are not licensed to sell it, be it for charity or otherwise. I don't know te rules, but I am sure I have read somewhere that there is an issue with this.

It definitely is the poisoning element I'm worried about.

I did wonder about the legality of raffling the homebrew, but to be honest as it's only 4 bottles as a one time thing I'd imagine the taxman would have bigger fish to fry. I've not given them to the raffle holder yet, so it's not too late to back out on either account.

Any more thoughts? I'm loathed to throw it out, but at the same time I really need to know whether there's a poisoning risk. I think it may be safer to throw it all, even though my girlfriend had a couple of glasses out of one of the bottles that I squirted with the solution on Saturday night, and she's still alive and kicking.

If anything there was only 3 or 4 squirts of the solution in each bottle, which as mentioned were then left on the bottle tree to drain.

Don't throw the beer. If the solution was too strong then that's just compared to the recommendations for using it as a solution.

The tiny amount left in your bottles will have been diluted to absolutely minimum levels by the beer. Hence SAFE!
