Hi all

I transferred my brew from FV to pressure barrel last night. Ive read that applying some petroleum jelly to the cap is a good idea (especially as mine is a cheapo Youngs barrel). As its now been in the barrel for a day, is it too late to remove the cap and apply the petroleum jelly to help make a good seal? In other words, will the C02 production have started already? The barrel and cap are both brand new so Im tempted to take a chance and leave the cap as is and hope for a good seal over the next couple of weeks. I will probably invest in a CO2 injector cap and canisters before its ready but havent got the funds to buy right now.... damn kids and christmas!

I used to use those type of barrels years ago i never put vaseline on the threads. If you want to you could take off the lid at this stage but i would leave it co2 is produced but as you dont have an injector would not take top off. I think you will find it will be ok.

I would leave it as it is also. I think I read somewhere that the vaseline isn't applied to make a better seal, but so the lid is easier to remove after the beer has been drunk and doesn't get stuck.

If I am wrong I am sure to be corrected soon enough!

Cheers!

The man is right :thumb: , I would leave it alone now. The Vaseline is put on to get a better seal works every time, but it's messy to get off before you sterilise again.

Just checking something, you did put vasaline around the seal on the tap didn't you?

When I first used a pressure barrell, I didn't seal the tap properly and the end result was a barrell which leaked everywhere! Not good for carpets

Thanks all. Useful advice as always... Im glad I found this site!

I will leave as is for now. I had heard about the tap leaking problem but seems ok so far. Ive got the barrel sat in its original box with a towel under the base just in case! The only thing I have to worry about now is willpower. Im moving into a cool area tomorrow and its going to be murder not cracking it open on Christmas day!
