I have been given a Coopers prem lager kit and it says I can add 1.5kg of malt. However I have read it does not make a difference if it is not added. Any thoughts guys?
I think you'll need to add something, be it malt extract, BKE or just plain sugar;
Malk Extract will probably give the most flavour (if you like it malty) but will be the most expensive addition, BKE tends to be a good compromise and plain sugar the cheapest but may make the beer taste a little thin or lacking in body.
With all that said, it depends on the kit you have as some work well with plain sugar (such as the Euro lager) and some benefit from BKE (such as the Aussie lager).
Thanks for the reply mate I forged on and added the malt extract to see what difference it makes in the brew. It was not cheap at £11 but if it improves the brew greatly then it will be money well spent.
£11 is expensive - added to the cost of your kit you've hit £20 or more which is in the terrority of the two can kits (and more expensive than AG once you have the kit)
I always use liquid extract for my kits - it just gives a much better finished beer.
Although actually I use spraymalt for lager kits as muntons do an extra light coloured one which gives a bit of body without making your lager too dark.
