Just wondering what is the best probe thermometer for use in homebrewing.

I have used some of the cheapo ones off ebay, but they don't last very long and all give different readings.

Is there a quality thermometer out there, that's generally accepted as the best suited for homebrew. (in mash tun & HLT)

Not ready to start fitting dials yet, so would like to see what the general consensus is.

I've bought 3 of these in the last year 2 for the brewery and one for the kitchen. Very pleased with it as its accurate and apparently water proof down to 20 inches in a 100lt boiler !! ( tested by me accidentally ) 1 week drying out and it was back in perfect working order.
For the price its a great thermometer.

Another vote for that model

I've tested mine with boiling water and ice water and the readings are spot on to 0.1C.

I have 2 of these (well, one now as one of them died in the middle of a brew day). They are good for the price but I've found them to suffer from their cheap build quality; buttons can become stuck and you need to remove the case to free them up.
Still good for the price though.

Thanks, just ordered one of those ready for my next brew.

My last one was one this type but it only last 1 turkey and 1 brew. I think i may have been the brew rather than the turkey that broke it

yes you have to remember its a cheap thermometer. I've had no problems with the buttons clogging up. The probe has been stuck in hot grains dangled in hot wort and has performed admirably through out. I do give it a good clean with Videne regularly especially the probe, but even the case and buttons get a wipe over with it.
I have an fairly expensive temp controller from Cedaronics and the temp readings from it match up perfectly with this. well within 0.1- 0.2 degrees which is good enough for me.

after the reviews and recommendations i ordered one yesterday morning and it arrived this morning so very happy with quick delivery was estimated next wednesday. i havent done any ag yet so using te thermometer will be my first. how far can the probe be put in the wort? does the whit plastic handle and cable need to stay out the wort or does it not matter? thanks

try and keep liquids away from the white handle ( especially the joint ) However one of mine went for a swim 16 inches under wort...the complete unit body and probe. I wiped it dry and put in in the airing cupboard untouched with battery removed for 1 week....Good as new.
