...as it is supplied, presumably it performs some function?

What is it?

keep the dust out but these type can get clogged if you have a very vigorous fermentation if its the S TYPE

To keep out wine fly and reduce evaporation from the airlock.

I remember someone asking if they were part of the packaging as he threw them in the bin, when he found out they were dust caps he was not happy.

If I lose one I put tinfoil loosely around the airlock. Can't be having those nasty flies and things swimming about in there! What about those cylindrical, two-part airlocks? Utterly dreadful!

Good for making a blow off tube from low

I've put it on!

Will now investigate "blow off tube"...

I changed over from the bubble type to the wilko handy airlocks a long time ago as the old ones were too tall to allow me to put my DJ's on my kitchen worktop under my kitchen cupboards, I have had no problems on DJ's but found them too small for a FV as they emptied, a blow off tube was the solution.

The two-part airlocks I've got simply won't stay in one piece unless I sellotape them together! Even the most moderate fermentation blows the top bit off. Being as tight as a gnat's chuff I won't throw them out but use them for ageing wine in demijohns.
