Hi
as anybody had any problems with crushed grain in the last few months from the Home Brew Company.
I have always used their grains of all types and never had a problem but the latest 25Kg sack of Minch pale malt is milled so fine it will not run through my filter after the boil. I spotted this as soon as I opened the sack and expected a stuck sparge but I left off the top plate on my Ace and had to keep stirring to avoid the dreeaded sparge which I did but after the boil there was so much flour and fine grain that it would not run through my bazooka filter and cause no end of problems.
Just enquiring as I have now another 21.5 kilos to go and makes for a extended brew day and takes the shine off the day
Ps I have emailed Shane to let him know somebody must have changed the settings on the crush and just hope it will be checked and put back to previous settings
Pete

Dunno about Minch cos the last sack I got from them was BestMalz but ye, that too was floury and could I hell get a clear runoff from the mashtun. Tons of break material in the boiler but no blockages. Top tip... try putting something under the boiler so it sits at an angle which raises the tap, then all the gunk settles at the opposite side. You can carefully return it to the level as the boiler empties and all the stuff remains below the tap. Works for me anyroad.

Thanks Gunge for the tip will give it a try
Yes just general grain milling not necessarily minch but well floury and fine grain never had it before from them but I hope they fix it as I will not buy again if it is like that as it really did spoil my brew today

don't know if the stirring the stuck sparge made more flour and fine grain go through the bottom plate but never had it before from them. Knew as soon as I opened the sack it was very fine hope it was just a hiccup and somebody had set it too fine and they take notice as a supporter of this forum to set it back as it was

Interesting. My last bag of grain from the Worcester Hop Shop also looks a bit fine and the I have had trouble with getting a tennis ball's worth of small grain bits post mash. In the last 2 or 3 brews, I have had to transfer the contents of the Grainfather into a BIAB bag inside a FV container and then transfer back to the GF. This was due to cut out during the sparge / heating to boil or general gumming up of the pump during chilling. As it adds around 45 mins to the day, I can't say I'm delighted. Efficiencies were 75% 77% and 78% for 5.5kg or so grain bills.

we need a list of grain crush suppliers so as to buy what suits each brewer as I said never had a problem with HBC but there grain crush as definitely changed at the moment which is not good when we are used to suiting us so whats to say the next 25g will be a problem as well ?
