Yes. The day has finally arrived, after brewing only 5 or so AG brews, I walked into my local last night and decided that my own brew was far superior to that which was on offer.

Don't get me wrong, my local boozer has between 6 and 8 decent ales on tap at any one time, but now that I have learned to brew my own and taste the subtleties between different grains and hops, I'm now able to brew what I like rather than plump for the best of standard fare thats on offer.

The brew I'm currently enjoying was made from my own recipe is an American IPA . Its still very young but its just getting better and better.

I'm not saying my beers are perfect, just that I think they are more suited to my tastes than average commercial brews aimed at the general public.

Has anyone else found that after getting their own beer suited to their tastes that they now look down their noses at comercial stuff?

Too right. My local is the taphouse for my local brewery and their dark bitter, stout and porter is superb, but they are a commercial (but small & independent) brewery so their beer should be good.

Mine is brewed by me and that makes it superior in my opinion!

Yep. Well, nearly.

I was drinking one of my beers the other day - nothing too elaborate, a lightly hopped 4.4% gold. For the first time I thought to myself "I've definitely paid good money on numerous occasions for beers that are far worse than this".

IMO with the recent explosion of brewing and new breweries opening there's so much out there, and as a result there's some incredible stuff being made but also some pretty average brews being churned out on a massive scale. This isn't meant to come off as arrogant or snobbish but it's come to the point that I too will only buy beer in certain places because of the above and because I reckon I can make something better.

Most definitely. But then again, the choice in my local is Guinness, Magners or (shudder) Harp

that's enough to drive you to drink!

only not in that pub

but yes there are only a few commercial beers that are better than the ones I brew, as mentioned earlier you can brew what YOU like. there aren't many 7-8% beers available in your typical pub.

Don't think i'll every be able to do a gueze though.

I too have become a nerdy beer snob. I often moan to my mates that the next pub we're going to only sells crap beer and that I don't want to go there!

By the same token, does anyone get a little bit excited when you walk into a pub and there's a new beer you haven't tried before? A bit like a beer festival, except it's not warm or flat.

I might be on my own on that one though.

I love the phrase "nerdy beer snob". It sums me up totally. I bore my mates and colleagues with my constant evangelising about the holy trinity of hops, malt and yeast.

Maybe that's a better phrase "beer evangelist"?

One for the thread on forum, member titles maybe?
