I am 77 old silver haired women with a heart problem amongst other things and have voluntary decided to self isolate and I am having a ball, I have for years got everything ordered on line and delivered, so no probs there, have always got a well stocked larder and freezer, make my own bread and yogurt and of course WOW type wines. My hobby is quilting so I have an indeterminate number of UFOs (unfinished objects!) So I can't see me getting bored anytime soon. Lucky for me I have a positive attitude so I am just making the best of things and letting my British grit run loose, come on all you Brits we didn't let two world wars beat us are we going to let a nasty little Virus do it, not on your Nelly, off to decant a couple of bottles of wine, cheers

That's the spirit! There's been some nonsense doomsaying on here in the last couple of days - life's never going to be the same! Of course it is, this will pass like every crisis that's ever come and gone. All the panic buyers and hoarders need to be taken to task, they're the ones turning this into a far worse situation than it needs to be.

Talking about hoarders, I think there will be a lot of people who will wonder in a couple of months why they still have so much pasta and tomato sauce in their larders...

Went shopping last Friday, pasta, tomato sauce, meat and most of the fish had disappeared, but still enough fresh produce, cheese, vegetarian options, actually even pre-made dinners. It probably helps that we are located in a little village.

It's a weird way of thinking: we have to stock up to be able make spaghetti! Or, when the crisis hits we will only eat spaghetti!

While i agree there is a lot of doom and gloom reported on the news (like just now on 5 live saying there is a rumour doing the rounds that London is about to be locked down for the foreseeable future) for many life will never be the same again and i am not just talking about those who are going to lose a family member, people are losing their jobs as people stop going out and it'll get worse when they close schools and pubs which i imagine will be any day now, businesses will go to the wall so when this is all over there will be no jobs for these employees to go back to, i agree about the morons panic buying but again i say the supermarkets have to share part of the blame for not limiting the number of essentials people could buy when panic buying started, they are starting to do it now but its a little late and we will see how that pans out.

My brother works in central London, and commutes by train or tube daily from the edge of London. He is 52, diabetic and lives with our 85 year old mother. Most of the company's staff have been told to work from home, but as he works for a sub contractor to them, he has been refused this option and earlier this week he was even told off for wearing latex gloves, as it 'gave an impression of panic'.

I have just heard that he has booked the next six weeks off as holiday and it feels like a massive weight off my mind.

Schools in England are to shut from Friday until further notice, the education secretary has said.

Gavin Williamson said schools would close except for the children of keyworkers such as NHS staff and vulnerable children.

It comes after Scotland and Wales said schools would close from the same day in response to the coronavirus pandemic.

UK deaths reached 104 as the NHS said a further 32 people had died in England.

The government says it plans to more than double the number of tests being carried out in England to 25,000 a day.

Confirmed cases in the UK rose to 2,626 on Wednesday, from 1,950 on Tuesday. There have been 56,221 tests carried out in the UK for Covid-19, of which 53,595 were confirmed negative.

The government will bring forward emergency legislation to protect private renters from eviction, Boris Johnson has said.

Tenants were "worried sick" they might not be able to pay rents if they fell ill, Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said at Prime Minister's Questions.

As Wales and Scotland said they would close schools by Friday Mr Johnson said a decision on England was imminent.

It came after Chancellor Rishi Sunak announced £350bn of help for companies.

On Tuesday, the chancellor promised mortgage "holidays", £330bn in loans and £20bn in other aid.

The government had been urged to do more for families, workers and tenants affected by coronavirus.

Mr Corbyn urged the PM to protect private renters in "the interests of public health", adding Britain's 20m private renters were "worried sick" about missing payments if they became ill, lost pay or had to self-isolate.

Mr Johnson said it will bring forward legislation to protect private renters from eviction, but will also avoid "pass[ing] on the problem" by "taking steps to protect other actors in the economy".

Housing associations will not evict tenants who are affected by the virus and fall behind on rent payments, Kate Henderson, of the National Housing Federation, which represents housing associations in England, has confirmed

If a drop of their disease ridden juices ends up in your IPA the alcohol will not be your best friend. No its time for people to pull together and follow the government advice whether you agree with it or not and stop using this thread as a political platform it is a virus thread ( they were voted in with virtually a landslide but some people will not let go) it a killer virus we are fighting not government policy.

I would be more worried about how often the barman/woman has washed their hands as they handle the glass you are about to put your lips on and how good is their glass washing machine is it hot enough to kill all the virus the last drinker may have left on it.

Washing at 40C won't kill viruses, even 60C won't. This is good for hand washing with soap but it only flushes them away.
