somebody told me that when you are doing the boil you should never put the lid on to stop steam escaping.
is this true or just a beer myth?

ps just poured 25 L down the drain ( eggy !!!! ) very sad.

The boil removes DMS ( the cabbagy taste ) along with other nasties so leaving the lid on is a no no :nono:
If you want to reduce the evaporation cut a hole in the lid about 2/3rds of the size of the lid. Look for one of Tubby_shaw's post of his brewdays he uses a lid like the above.
 
I deliberately sparge to 5ltrs more than my final length.
This is to allow for the reduction during boiling (lid off).
