To suck eggs??

As an oldie looking in can I make a suggestion to all those mashing for the first few times?

Don`t get too fancy at first, concentrate on your `stock` beer and get that right. Once you have mastered that then is the time to experiment and even join a join a club and try showing it.

I agree with all of that. However, I did have fun finding that out for myself. This full-mash brewing is a huge learning curve and I think it's only by making these sorts of mistakes that teaches us to take a step back and learn to produce simple, but well executed beer rather than try to re-invent the wheel.

To me it was/is all part of the fun. Trying to make a complex double IPA at your first go at AG might cost you a few quid in grain and hops, and you'll run out of hair to pull out whilst you're trying to sort out a stuck mash. But I certainly wouldn't attempt to stifle anyone's enthusiasm.
