My local shop has replaced target hops with magnum from Germany (as a direct replacement).

The recipe for my Wye Valley HPA clone calls for Target as a bittering hop at 90 minutes, but I have magnum in the freezer. My first impression would be that substituting target for magnum would be OK in a darker ale, but HPA is really pale.

On the other hand, bittering hops are just that, so the other half of me wonders whether it will make any considerable difference to the flavour.

Any advice from any hopophiles on here?

A 90 minute boil will leave nothing much more than bitterness, so the difference will be negligible IMO.

That's what I thought, but the cynical side of me thought they would rather have a sale...

Cheers 🍺

Magnum is a pretty clean bittering hop so you should be OK. I'm planning a series of pale ales using the same base recipe which includes Magnum for bittering and a series of other hops for flavour and aroma later in the boil.
