After much fannying about with the 3 piece, 3/4" ball valve for my boiler I'm of the impression that the threads on the tank are farcked!

They don't look knackered, apart from the second thread in is a bit flattened, but I can't get the tap more than 1 and a half rotations! I'm going to have to give the fabricator next to barley bottom a ring in the week and see if they can have a look at it as re cutting threads is WAY past my ability!

Things were getting somewhere this week as well!

Is this is involving the use of an olive?
If so, the olive may be too far onto the pipe; cut 3-4mm off the end!

no olive EV, it's just a 3/4" threaded SS pipe and a BES 3/4" BSPF 3 piece ball valve

you could buy a small tap and dye set and cut a new thread

I could I supose! any idea where from! they all seem to be in 'M' sizes rather than inch

I could also f$%k it up and end up with a useless tank! :D

not a close up but that is the pipe at the bottom!

BSP parallel. I've had the thread of a BSPT male hose tail next to it and it's definitley BSP and parallel.

you wont need to rethread it, stainless steel picks up very easily (gets tight) go get some needle files (cheap form hardware shop such as B&Q) and dress the flattened thread, (file it to neaten up).

UP

Or you can get a 'thread file' and dress the flattened part - You can do it in situ, needle would work too, but be careful not to remove too much material.

HGV fitters use them to repair threading on damaged spigots as i did early in my apprentiship

As it's a BES Ball Valve you might be better off buying a Cheap 3/4 Female Plumbing fitting and trying to fit that on your pipe first. I've had several Fittings from BES (Including a 1/2" Ball Valve) that are completely not to spec as far as BSP thread sizes are concerned, and it has proven impossible to fit it to proper BSP fittings. I bought a BSPP Tap ( 1/2") from Tap And Die to fettle mine (You will need a worktop machine Vice though).

As I say try it with a standard Brass plumbing fitting first to check if it is the pipe or the ball valve at fault.

Not just BES and ballvalves either. I've tried various different suppliers and I've had trouble with the threads with most of the fittings I've bought. I suspect they're all coming out of the same factory in China.

I've had a BES 1/2" Bsp tap come with a Left hand thread :wha: FFS it's not hard to send out the right stuff is it!

I've discovered this too!
Considering We are a century on from victorian engineering it is not much to expect a threaded fitting to be reasonably accurate.

have you guys not heard of the sale of goods act

you should not have to accept sub standard products send them back and keep doing it till the suppliers get angry then something will get done about it or it will fall out of use.

cheers for all the replies chaps

after some brute force and ignorance (plus a BFS! Note the spanner I was using when I couldn't get the valve on, and the one I used to ACTUALLY get it on! :D ) I now have a 3/4" bsp tap attached to my tank :D
