Hi everyone

My first home brew a youngs definitive bitter is ready for bottling and I went to tesco and bought 11x2 Liters Tesco Value Spring water, just for the bottles but after I got them home and emptied them I realized that they might not be designed to withstand the pressure that secondary fermentation will put them under.

Has anyone had any experience of value bottles exploding? I don't not want a mess all over my dorm room as it would be expensive.

Many thanks

Me again

If it's sparkling water the bottles should be fine :thumb:

If it's still water they might be ok if they look like pop bottles, but they won't if there are any ridges around them.

its still water, Define ridges, I think i made a big boo boo

I'm not sure how to explain but some bottles feel crinkly. If the sides are parallel and smooth they may be ok, but if there are any indentations forget it.

Surely you have mates who drink cola? Look for 5/600ml Coke or Pepsi bottles.

I had no problems with the 2L bottles of still water, however I found the 1L tonic water bottles better. It took me about a month to collect enough though and I went off gin

Ive just been and got 20 2ltr bottles of Tesco Value sparkling and they are definitely ok, well gassed up and really hard at the top.The still value bottles look exactly the same actually.
Also got a Youngs harvest stout impulse buy (£8.99) , ,the do John Bull ,BrewBuddy , Youngs and a range of wines and enhancers too.
All the same Youngs beer and wine ingredients/additives and equipment as Wilkos but a bit dearer.
Handy tho for after work, if you drop your hydrometer (like me). :)

Its ok disaster averted, I paid my flatmates girlfriend who took me back over tesco and I picked up 11x2 liters tesco value sparkling water. So they should be able to take the strain. I couldn't get refund I had already emptied the bottles but at 16p a bottle for both still and sparkling I am not that bothered.
But now I have 10 still and 11 sparkling so plenty of bottles

Thanks anyway guys & gals

Well i would use them for wine except I am not going to make any wine just yet, tomorrow I am going down my local HBS and picking up another beer kit and getting that in the then empty FV, just like Moley said nature abhors a vacuum. So they will come in handy for the second batch of beer as seanipops says the still bottles should be fine for beer.

There is no difference in the bottles for still and sparkling mineral water . . . it's too expensive to run a plant producing specific bottles for still and sparkling mineral waters. . . . In fact the Whitelabs tubes are PET blanks for 2L bottles ;)

The above does not apply for the 5L containers!!!

thanks for clearing that up

so basically a decent water bottle will do for cider or wine?

other question if i had a FV waiting to go could i use the water from these bottles
then wash etc to fill with FV thats ready?

call me tight i dont mind but better than chucking down the drain

I beg to differ, do an image search for Cristaline or Buxton and you'll see the sort of bottles I meant he couldn't use, same sort of indentations as the 5 litre PETs.

I know what moley is saying, they are bottles you can stamp on to flatten for recycling but are usually more associated with better quality mineral water. Supermarket value brands are unlikely to use these bottles.

Just out of interest, would plastic bottles be ok for wine, ie storage 6+ months??

Heathen - wine should be treated with respect :nono:

Seriously though, it has never even crossed my mind to try it, although I have matured wines in 5 litre PETs for 6-12 months with no ill effects, so I can't see any difference.

I dont see why not, the only reason I asked was that I am more likely to have plastic bottles around the place than glass. I am dying to get some WOW on the go, after easter I will, ill try.

Also I sterilized my bottles with 1/2 -> 3/4 cap full of baby sterilizer and COLD water. At the time I though sterilizing is sterilizing but thinking back was it such a good idea, should I have used warm? I know it seems stupid question but unless I ask it its going to bug me.
