Hi all
hope this is not a daft quesstion, when a recipe calls for an amount of sugar when is the right time to add it,the reason i ask is, in dave lines book it states when to add,in GW book the sugar amount is listed with the grain, does the sugar go in with grain,if not what will be the result of adding sugar to mash tun.

Hi John, my understanding is you put it in the wort half way through the boil, good luck

If a GW recipe has called for sugar I have added it with the 2nd hops, last 15 mins of the boil.

Some of your sugar would have stayed behind in the tun, so your OG might have been slightly higher if you'd added it to the boil.

Traditionally when cane sugar was used a lot in UK beers it was added to the kettle with the idea of it getting slightly caramelised in the boil. However nowadays in home brewing I just add it to the FV. In Belgians that use candi-sugar it is added to the FV in stages.
