Northern Brewer
Landlord.
I haven't brewed since I got hitched and made "Wedding Tackle" ale. According to the guests my Wedding Tackle was very tasy and they couldn't get enough - :)
I have grown and picked some hops however I've mislaid the bit of paper that said which plant was which variety, I now have 4 different hop plants, I know one is fuggles and another is redsell but can't remember the other two - I'll track it down.
I picked a load on Saturday and had them in the tumble dryer on the lowest setting for a while, they reduced in weigth by 50% so not dry but getting there. I hadn't bought any grain for a while so used up what I had.
For a an 80L batch I used the following
6kg of Golden Promise
7kg of Crisp marris otter
250g of extra dark crystal
500g of smoked Rauchmalt
250g of torrefied wheat
100g of WGV (60 min boil)
100g of Centennial (10 min boil)
A couple of handfuls of my own hops (redsells and A M Other) for 10 min steep.
S-O4 yeast
There was going to be 500g of caragold too but I found the bag unnopened when I finished mashing Ended up at 1044 so just about right.
So its a bit of an alsorts brew, should be relatively bitter, quite pale and possibly too smokey - so either hero or zero.
I made a couple of changes to the brewery controls. I was going through tube heater in the fermentation cupboard at an alarming rate and guesses it was because the PID was pulsing every 2 seconds. Before I was using the same PID/SSR for both copper and FV, just moved a lead and changed temp. I already had the FV PID ready in the case to go so added an SSR so it's now idependent. I changed the working cycle on my REX C100 PID for the FV from the default of 2 seconds to 10 seconds and so far so good. May make it even longer later.
Here's the brew in progress, mucky floor due to spilling some grain, lots of water and a faulty pump connection.
Greedy cow eating the spent grain
Cheers
Andy
