So I need another heated cupboard! Ok then Plans away!llannige said:Recommended storage temp of grains is 15C.
Your sparge liquor should the same temperature regardless of the starting temperature of the gristmuddydisco said:I found out by warming the grains the night before brewday meant my sparge water didn't need to be so hot!
Absolutely years. While doing some research on hop storage index (HSI) recently I found temperature is the biggest factor. Having them vacuum packed make little difference to having them in a sealed or open to the air. I couldn't believe it... well didn't want to because I've got a vacuum sealer and bought tons of vac baggy stuff. I used some Galaxy that I had for 18 months the other day that was just in a bag with a clip on it and it was fine. I nibbled some and made a tea before using it to test it.Oh, I need to move my hops to the freezer. How long can they be kept for?
Good to know, I have a vacuuming system with bags with air valves. I notice that after some time they are not as vacuum as in the beginning. But the advantage of this system is that by vacuuming I gain storage space, and that I can reuse the bags, i.e. I can take from the bags what I need, close and vacuum them again. Caveat: with hops, use an inner bag so that no dust can be sucked in the valves. (In case you want to know where I got this: it was from Lidl, last fall).Absolutely years. The big silver bags you get won't seal in my Lidaldidi one as they're too thick. Before I was rebagging them into vac bags but now just press the air out of the bag and use an iron to run over the end. I did use a vac bag on some fresh wet hops I picked just to have the fetishistic pleasure of seeing them squeezed and suffocated.Saves me bothering with a vac-packer

Quite a lot of bags you can do the ironing thing with but you just have to get a strip of tin foil and put the edge of the bag in a fold of it or it'll wither up all nasty. I've used crisp bags and cat food pouches. Yeah, I'm a right classy bird.
