Hi all
I am new to brewing and have just put on my first kit a Muntons highland heavy ale and as normal I rushed in, then read what I should have done later.
The kit all went together fairly well only I sprinkled the yeast on the foam that had formed in the FV, then I gave it all a good stir. Since then the FV lid has bulged up and the air lock is under pressure, so something is happening and time will tell.
I also didn't take a original gravity reading which I will do next time.
Anyway my question is when I do my next kit should I just sprinkle the yeast on top and leave it?
This site I am sure will be a mine of usefull information and I will try to keep any silly questions to a minimum
Thanks

Sprinking is absolutely fine mate. If you have a Hbs or wilkos, it will pay you to buy a hydrometer now so you can figure out when its finished :) after activity stops you should be reading about 1.010 :)

your either a sprinkler or a mixer..............

Come out of the closet and declare what you are............ :D :D

Either is fine, those yeasts are hungry little buggers and will find the goodies.

Yep you either sprinkle or mix it makes no difference it's going to get into the wort anyway. I tend to sprinkle onto the foam and leave for a few mins to rehydrate then give it a little mix in.

However, recently I looked into the value of re-hydrating dried yeast before pitching and after reading the following I am a convert and will never sprinkle again...

+1 - re-hydrating seems to get it going muxh quicker, I did a brew yesterday afternoon with Nottingham yeast and the airlock was bubbling by late evening. With sprinkling it on top, it can take up to 24hrs to get moving. I like the re-assuring sound of a bubbling airlock before I go to bed. :D
