Half way through my first brew (thanks for the advice so far) and getting to the point I would like to take a gravity reading.

My question is this; if I just wanted to sterilise a single item, rather than faffing around with the powders etc, would sterilising by pouring boiling water over an implement be sufficient?

Thanks in advance

If you're not going to put the sample back, you only need to sterilise the tool you use to extract the sample. I have used boiling water for single sterilisations but pouring it over might not be sufficient, it might be worth steeping the tool in some boiled water and give it a little time.

Hi I think it depends how your going to get the sample, if using a turkey type baster (wine thief etc) then just stick the end in a kettle of boilng water (hold it in there as the water boils, effective sterilising for this purpose will be anything much above 75-80 degrees and DON'T return the sample! I tend to pour a bit into a glass etc, then transfer (but thats just me)! I'll Probably get in trouble on here for doing this, but it's worked so far!

I have a tap fitted on my fv's, and no need to sterilise anything for a sample. :thumb: Taps are cheap and easy to fit.

Thanks guys! I will make up some extra and put into a spray bottle next time I make sanitiser.

Fingers crossed everything turns out ok, there was a faint wiff of vinegar when I took the lid off.....From looking around on here it seems I should go ahead and bottle before I judge it.

Cheers

What do you use, not all sanitizers keep when made up I think.
