Hi Everyone,

Ive been looking at the link at top of page and saw this:-

http://www.thermofix.co.uk/epages/es139 ... l-STC-1000

Has anybody any experience with this item. I have never used a temp control before and am considering this one as would allow to brew out in the garage saving space and back pain from moving full FVs. I assume you just set it up with the cool and the hot leads in the FV? As it has a cool setting is it possible to use this instead of a standard copper wort chiller?

Cheers,

DirtyC

Hi DC,
Yes, lots of folk use them for fv temperature control. I use them in conjunction with a heat tube and beer cooler using an insulated cupboard. Cedaronics are all built up ready for use taking the 'faff' out of making it up for yourself :thumb:
If you do a search on the forum you'll get loads of hits, this is Springers latest one ;)

Not sure what you mean by that. It could be used to control a valve allowing water to flow through a IC, or to control another cooler of sorts. I think the max controlling draw is 10A...tbc

Cheers Vossy,

Forgive my ignorance, is this item all I need or do I need this heating tube too? I was assuming that it would be all I needed to maintain the FV temp? Just set the temp and leave it to maintain it? That;s how I wondered if could be used instead of wort chiller post boil?

Cheers,

DC

it is not a simple as that, the controller is a "switch" that will activate one socket when the temperature falls below a set value and another when it rises above the higher set value. You need to connect a heater and a cooler to each socket (there is a bit of a wiring excercise).

For instance you could wire a aquarium heater into the heat sockets - this might be good enough for this time of year as you may just want to keep a consistent fermentation temperature and switch off for a crash cool.

If you want to use the cooling section you can wire in a MAXI style chiller (or connect just to the pump part of it).

One of the common ways of using these is with a larder fridge.

You use the fridge as a temperature controlled cupboard and you use the STC-1000 to control the temperature of the cupboard.

You plug the fridge into the cooling side socket.
You plug a bar heater(which you put in the fridge) into the heating side.
You insert the temperature sensor into the fridge as well.

Then when you turn it on you can set the controller to maintain the temperature in the fridge. The STC-1000 is just a clever thermostat really which can turn on a heat source, or a cooling source as an when required, you still need an approporiate source of heat and cooling to plug into it.

You can maintain the temperature in the fridge anywhere between about 0C and 30C, not that you would ever really need to go above 20C.

Thanks guys.

I see, there's a bit more to it than I intially expected. Might just stick with the traditional method with bringing FV inside and wrapping in sleeping bag. Its worked so far.

I've tried to order one for the summer ahead, but beware they are having problems with payments at the moment, I filled out the form and went to the payment area to pay by Paypal (the only option of payment) it didn't direct me to the Paypal site to put in passwords etc I then got an automated email saying thanks for the payment from Thermofix.

I emailed Tim (Thermofix) later stating what had happened and he replied very quickly saying it had happened a couple of times before recently? no money has been taken from my Paypal account.

I emailed back asking Tim to contact me when everything is up and running from the web site so I could order one, Tim replied "send the amount to [email protected] and he should get it"!

I sent an email back saying contact me when things are working.

Colin.

It sounds like they just have an issue linking from their website to the Paypal site, thats not unsurprising as paypal have made some changes lately as to the way to interface to them.

He has given you the address to pay to, so you would be able to just login to your paypal account and send the money to that address.

Thanks Runwell-Steve, yes, he has given me the address and he said the same as you, I'm fairly new to Paypal and I knew I could send a payment to him but I am not in a hurry for the controller and would like to do it properly through the web site.

Cheers

I was one of the ones Tim refered to as having a problem with paypal, so just payed Tim direct. Also had a problem buying from Rob the maltmiller with paypal.

Hi All

Yes, there is a small problem that we (me and the web page designer) can't get our heads around with PP. Any sales via ebay get sent through without problem, and as Dennis says, when this issue cropped up on the website we had to ask people to login to PP and send a payment from there.

I accept that some want to pay via the website, but for now this is looking impossible (arghhhhhhh!), so I just have to ask for patience until hopefully we can get to the bottom of it.

@Steve - what changes have PP made recently that you know of that could affect this?

Tim

Hi again everyone,

Just to let you know that I have heard from the web page guy and he (says) he has identified that the problem some of you have had has been to do with the frames on the Cedaronics site. It wasn't affecting everyone, and only certain browsers seemed to have the issue.

Anyway, anyone else like to try it out - be my guest! :thumb:

Many thanks,

Tim
