Is this too high for IPA starting gravity?

Shouldn't they all be 1.04 for beer? I've only just started, so I'll watch this with interest.

Looking for a strong IPA 7% ish. Going to dry hop with a good amount t of Mosaic. It I usually starts out high but not usually this high. I’ve added yeast now, couple of sachets of US 05. Guess it’s a bit late to add water now if I wanted to lower it?

Well,
It was about 12kg of Maris, mashed for 60 minutes at 65 degrees. Sparged between 75 and 80. Boiled for 1 hour.
Chinook, Ahtanum and Mosaic at various points.
I’ve ended up with about 7 gallons.

According to the Brewhouse calculator at the top of the page, you’re hitting about 58% efficiency with that amount of malt. So I guess the answer is
“Could do better if tried harder” :laugh8:
Joking!

Would you add cold tap water from a sterilised jug or boil some water and let it cool?

According to @Gerryjo post you need 10-12 litres of water to get the gravity you want. I wouldn’t add tap water straight out of the tap. I might be tempted to use bottled water but never done it so can’t advise with confidence. @terrym might have some words of wisdom on this one?

If you can drink your tap water there is no reason not to use it. If I need to dilute that's where mine comes from.

I made the GEB IPA

6.3kg which had a OG of 1.064 FG 1.010 giving me 20 litres at 7.1%

12kg grain bill seems a huge amount even for 7 gallons.
