If you've got a local homebrew shop support them, much more knowledge/helpfulness/advice, they often do starter kits, about £60, but hey you're going to get 40pts, and after that you just pay for the kit... If you want a simple kit go for a one-can about £8-12 depending where you go. The first one I done after returning to brewing was John Bull IPA and it turned out very nice, after that I done a Woodfords Wherry and it is lovely and superior in my opinion but takes a bit longer to settle out.
If you really want to go for it my advice is get storage vessels, be it kegs, cornies, bottles, whatever, to at least contain three kits, then you can be drinking one, maturing one, and conditioning one and you'll get the best out of your brews and not be tempted to drink one when its too young. It takes time and you'll be brewing constantly for weeks, I started again in Jan and I've nearly got enough stock (I'm too thirsty).
Also read the advice on this forum, it really is useful, erm and make sure your kit is cleaned and sterilized proper when you use it, and erm, patience.... Thats my tuppence worth anyway.
Good luck and enjoy
