At one stage Donegal and Monaghan were supposed to have been part of the Northern Ireland State. James Craig refused as it would have diluted the in built Protestant majority of the proposed Northern Ireland state.Twitter was buzzing today, I did see old maps on how they came up with the border. Derry was nearly in the Republic, it was basically a religious head count.
My understanding Derry was in the south as it was an easier border but the history of the walled city and its strong links to unionism was the reason it was traded back to the north.Twitter was buzzing today, I did see old maps on how they came up with the border. Also a massive concern is the welfare system. On a even more serious note.
The two biggest thing preventing an United Ireland is the NHS and the HSE
In what way are they backwardAlso a massive concern is the welfare system.
Lots of people in the north want the ideal of a United ireland but think they would hold on to all the benefits that come from living in the uk.
Ireland is also very backward in lots of things that are taken for granted in the north.
Drive on the wrong side of the road still. In what way are they backward
Sorry. This Worf would prefer to quote Sgt Schultz...Worf might know something...
Education, social housing, rural infrastructure ,high speed broadband ,disability services. In what way are they backward
I think the full story to all this was BBC and RTE both declined to broadcast the episode at first apparently because Data references the 2024 reunification as being an example from history where terrorism worked. Then Sky got the rights to it and broadcast it but edited. When Sky repeated it in 2006, they didn’t edit it. BBC repeated the season in 2007 and that episode was unedited this time. All episodes of that series were shown around 2am, thankfully there was a big overlap between Trekkers and people who were able to programme their video recorders!I'm curious as to what "after midnight on September 29th" is. Surely that's just "at some time on the 30th"?
Judging by the comments so far overnight, it’s all very civil. I obviously underestimated my fellow forum members, or the origins of T-34 yeast are more contentious than Irish politics!Open honest thoughts are welcome. Hateful spiteful trolls are not.
It’s also a question about a prediction from Star Trek from 1990 so I’m not looking to get into a debate on who is responsible for what in the past (well I hope not anyway )
It’s not even at 30min boil levels yetJudging by the comments so far overnight, it’s all very civil. I obviously underestimated my fellow forum members, or the origins of T-34 yeast are more contentious than Irish politics!
Educational standards are higher in the South, I agree on social housing and rural infrastructure. I already pay rates which covers the bins being emptied. Paying for a GP visit is a big one but when was the last time you got a GP visit. If I was to pick up the phone now I would not be seen.Education, social housing, rural infrastructure ,high speed broadband ,disability services.
Would you like to pay rates and also have to pay every week to have your bins emptied ? To visit a gp it’s €50 each time then your prescription on top no cap.
Even if you go to casualty you have to pay to be seen.
I agree but if people are presented with the facts of what will change how many will actually vote to become united ?It's not a case of walking into paradise. The conversation needs to start happening. N. Ireland doesn't work, people are sick and tired of the same *****.
Both government's need to engage to shape a better future for all. The first vote will be to keep N. Ireland in the single market. The protocol will be tweaked, hopefully bringing in more investment
And then the Rev Ian paisley became instrumental in the good Friday agreement and became great friends with Martin Mc Guiness. Go figureKnowing little of the background and general situation, I started having a chat with an old colleague I hadn't seen for a good seven years. We had worked together for nearly 20 and the topic of reunification had never arisen (in fact it was the N I Protocol which prompted it) . I quickly realised I was trying to have a friendly chat with the very reincarnation of the rev. Ian Paisley himself. The Wise One Ended up showing him the door and I was left wondering whether the Republic would even want to reunite with people of such "depth of feeling" shall we say. It has been heartening to see that everyone on this thread has been reasonable and that, possibly, the likes of my now ex-mate are few and far between.
