I use spraymalt medium to make up my starter by boiling 100g in up to 2liter water. The boil is kept going for 29 mins.
The question is, other than ensuring sterilization, is there any other reason for the boil time?
Does it help keep the brew clear, does it alter the flavours, is there a chemical reaction? :wha:

Any ideas?

Woke up to a cold by fine day and the better half asked if I was brewing. Good Idea I thought so thought I try a low hop brew for a change.
Starter made and making, mash on, kettle boiled for tea, monopoly game on the table. Could be a good day. :thumb:

Hope more of you are having a good brew day.

To desolve the DME & sanitise the wort prior making a yeast starter you only really need to boil for a few minutes 5-10 minutes will be well on the safe side :thumb: However when I culture yeast from bottle conditioned ales, I usually add a few grams of hops of any kind & boil for about 25 minutes to extract the hop oils. my reason for this I beleave, is that the cooled hopped wort will help inhibit unwanted bacterial growth. culturing & yeast starters require extra vigelance in sanitation

Should your yeast starter not be given 24 hours + to get the yeast really going?

I always give it 24hrs, except yesterday when everything went wrong. So I used the heart cake form last brew instead and I'm using the starter today to see if I can do better.
Mash is 106min today and the time is u, so off to start sparge :thumb:
