Kit #5 got brewed up last night - Burton Bridge Porter. (Big porter fan!!)

Went with the option of brewing it with no sugar, just 100% Muntons Dark Spraymalt. The spraymalt says you just chuck it in on top of the contents of your can and proceed as normal. So I did (like I did with the #4 Coopers IPA) and got a similar but more pronounced effect.

Really hard impervious lumps of spraymalt, fortunately, with a history of making lumpy white sauce and custard I figured it out and got my big balloon whisk into action and got them disolved after a considerable beating.

How do you do yours? Do you disolve in water then add to the FV? Bung it in dry and beat out the lumps? Any other techniques you use?

it disolves better in cold water, I normally mix it into a large jug before adding to the FV

I used to have problems with lumps of undissolved DMS, but I came across another thread (can't remember whose it was or where it came from} This advocated adding the DMS to a FV which should be reasonably dry ( I get by with giving the FV a good shake upside down after sterilising and rinsing) Then mix 2 pints of just boiled water to 2 pints of water from the cold tap pour in to the FV and swirl the FV and contents like b.....y for about 30 secs or so, by which time the DMS has magically dissolved, after which the contents of the can are added and stirred to dissolve. I find that if I am brewing a kit, if I wash out the tin with hot water afterward to get the last of the syrup and add this to FV as well, then the temperature usually comes out at 21/22C when the whole lot is made up to 5galls with water from the cold tap.. Easy peasy!

I add mine to the fv with some cold water, stir thoroughly until it's dissolved then add my can/s and hot water. I then beat the hell out of it with a brewing paddle until the paddle come out clean before topping up with cold water mixing it in as i go
