Speed limiters do we need them?

According to the RAC and The European Transport Safety Council websites;

A) The system will reduce engine power when it detects speeding.
B) Will log GPS data for use in accident investigation

The legislation will require automotive companies to assist drivers in maintaining the speed limit. The feedback I’ve had is that for 2022, a warning will be sufficient to make the car legal to sell in the EU.

You are correct on the data logging bit, but again this is something that is already in place on a number of cars, and isn’t a new way of snooping on people.
 
My nissan has optional speed limiter built in..only used it playing around,same with cruise control and the sat nav changes with the speed limits..don't know if you could link the two..
I find the best option is to look at the signs and drive accordingly,.although this isn't always that simple.
 
Has anyone got a car that reads road signs? Does it work? Is it reliable? What can it do apart from speed limits?
 
I think it's all taken in the wrong context. Speeding isn't the cause of accidents. Driving like tool is. I can do 50mph on the motorway. But if I'm 2ft away from the car in front and it brakes I'll hit it. But I can 100mph safely if I have good vision and good braking distance.
 
I love motorways. 150 on the mobike is another realm, another world, where you feel like that dude piloting the Millenium Falcon ( or whatever ) where just like the stars and galaxies, all other vehicles rush toward you at an alarming rate. Ya don't need video games, but your brakes and tyres and mental agility have to be perfect. Meanwhile, the missus doesn't need to worry about straying over the speed limit as her motor already has a built-in limiter... it's a Picasso.
 
I have no problem with this with some provisos. First being that it is switchable, I.E. you can enable or disable it. Potentially that could be pass-protected, as in you either enter a code or carry a RIFD key which either enables the speed limiting or disables it. Then you could have a potentially very quick car and allow your younger drivers to use it.
Next one is GPS fencing, and the possibility to be able to set areas such as town centres etc where it cuts in. I would definitely like to see this enabled outside schools, hospitals and a few other places. it drives me absolutely nuts to see people tearing about at school chucking out time!
I am a believer in freedom though despite the above, however my short motor racing period quickly taught me that if you think you are safe going fast on the public road, you are not! you are just being dangerous to both yourself and others. It's a romantic notion in a way, thinking of yourself as some sort of modern day Stirling Moss/Senna/Hamilton, but it's a fallacy. True it's not that speed that kills.... but it's not any help at all if you do crash. The difference to a crash scene between one at say 70mph and another at 100mph is huge
Somehow I have found myself having driven vehicles in a lot of other countries, and some are good, some great, some bad and some downright dangerous! The country that always struck me as interesting was Norway. They have a national speed limit of about 60 mph. No one really speeds, and those that do and get caught go to jail, no joke! A friend of a friend of mine went to jail for a first motoring offence of exceeding a town limit speed limit by 10 mph! so let's say doing 40 in a 30 zone! That said, driving in Norway is a very pleasant experience. Yes it takes a while to go distance, but it's very pleasant and stress free. those that do want to drive fast, join motor clubs and either do track days or take up motor racing. Or use private land.

I test drove a honda jazz and it read traffic signs MOST of the time and you could link it to the speed limiter which was nice. However it also missed a few asad.

The issue I believe is that when there is a bend in the road the detection systems are pointing the the direction the vehicle is facing rather than the curve of the road. - adapting it to go round corners would help solve this. A bit like the cars whose lights can swivel as you turn around a bend/corner.

so as most tech stands it only works some of the time, e.g..........



To be fair if you read the manual is does warn you of the technologies limitations

At what point do all these 'aids' actually be come distractions? In my early car driving days, there was no sat nav, Bluetooth or touch screen etc.. whilst driving along I could change the radio channel or volume etc without even having to look away because there were physical buttons to press. Now I have a car with a touch screen that does everything and I find it very hard to use whilst driving, yes I can change volume on my steering wheel but try changing radio station now with DAB, because you have to go through a whole menu system to get to the station you want.
 
Fewer ******** drivers on the road might help.

Bloody hell those are £35k list without any options adding on. Just think of the home brew setup you could have built for that.

You could have built that brewery you always wanted for that kind of money.
£35k for a seat. Would expect a nice 5 series for that.

I hadn't heard of the brand until i read this thread a lot of money but seems you get a lot of toys for it if thats your thing.

At least people will notice the Cupra as it passes instead of thinking there goes another BMW and unless you are really into the BMW brand you wouldn't have a clue which model it is as they all look basically the same.

Can anyone name this new model?

And the ateca looks like every generic suv. Including one my wife drives at half the price.
