Trying to boost my efficiency a little.....

When sparging I usually do as follows:
1- vorlauf until wort comes clear
2- make sure runnings are at correct L/min (usually 1)
3- sparge water in the top of the tub at the same rate, while collecting runnings in boiler
4- continue as above until I have collected correct volume.

My question is should I cease the spare water before I’ve finished collection of wort (and just drain the grain bed for the last bit) or just continue sparging until I’ve collected the correct amount??

Depends what you want I suppose. If you want to hit your predicted gravity, keep checking gravity while you sparge and stop when you hit the number or if you want volume, keep sparging until you get your required volume.

From the total volume of liquor, I use all of what's remaining after the portion used for mashing is removed. When the final aliquot of sparge water goes in and the grain bed starts to run dry, I keep a very watchful eye on the outflow; it will very abruptly go cloudy, that's when I shut the tap.
