Hi home brewers

I'm new to the forum and pretty new to home brewing (2to3 years on off bottling method ) but find bottling takes for ever, would love to be able to buy a pressure barrel and go down that route. Am I right in saying that I would need to buy the old sodastream adaptor and the new german sodastream adaptor which will connect together and then connect to the new sodastream cylinder that connects to the s30 valve? Can't get any other sort of cylinders here in Guernsey. Any help and links etc would be most appreciated.
Many thanks in advance to all you brewers 😀🍻

Well no? I'd say you're not right! I'm sure the solution is nothing like as complicated. But I don't use pressure barrels or sodastream cylinders so hopefully someone else will chip in. Basically...

What do you need to attach new Sodastream cylinders to a pressure barrel?

You want to get a new sodastream adaptor, 10-15 quid. This will allow you to connect a sodastream CO2 bottle to a standard pressure gauge. Where is goes from there is up to you. You'd want a fitting compatible with an S30, of course.

Hi Peebee

Yeah it's a pressure barrel

Yeah cheers mcmullan

I've ordered a sodastream adapter and regulator from co2 supermarket, will it be a tube (like a syphon tube) from the regulator to the s30 valve that I will need to fit? Or is there another way?

I use 6mm OD PVC tubing to join my sodastream regulator to corny kegs. I use it for serving pressure only, but I did crank up the pressure to about 30 psi to test the tubing and it survived. There are so many options when it comes to joining things up. Wait for your order to arrive then you can decided what you'll need. Post back if you get stuck :thumb:

My solution to convert Sodastream cannister to s30 valve...

To adapt the valve on the barrel...
http://brewingathome.co.uk/product/m...l-barrel-hose/
Comes with a 6mm hose.

The aquarium supplies sites have adapters for sodastream bottles to fit them onto regulators.
http://www.co2supermarket.co.uk/sodastream-adapter.html
http://www.co2supermarket.co.uk/co2-regulators-gc5.html

Need a 4mm hose to attach to the regulator...

Plus a little plastic adaptor to fasten two different sized hoses together:

You'll save loads of effort if you have a local supplier of that Hambledon-bard stuff

edit: Will a picture help?

Those tube sizes are internal diameter, right? Do you prime with sugar and use the CO2 for serving too?

Looks like a neat solution :thumb: HebridesRob and its exactly what I want to do...but on a budget ...I've got an old pressure keg that hasn't got a S30 valve fitted so what I'm hoping to do is get the sodastream cylinder adapter that you linked to at CO2 s'mart & then fit a valve in the keg that I can just screw the s'stream cylinder (with adapter fitted) into to give a quick blast every so often when the level of beer in the keg drops...I've seen something like this on youtube...any ideas what valve I need to fit to the keg...CO2 s'mart say its adapter is DIN477 / JIS m22-14 / BS 341 No. 8 / W21.8-14 / .860" x 1/14 ...I'm not sure what that all means!!!
thnx

I only attach the gas once the pressure in the barrel has depleted and the beer comes out slowly. You can see from my picture the beer level is quite low now.

Apologies for not responding sooner, been away from home for a while. I suspect you already found a solution but...

Not remotely an expert on this but CO2 supermarket stuff is industry standard sized so it shouldn't be a problem, except that the S30 valve works as a pressure relief valve as well as a valve to inject CO2. I think you'll have trouble finding a standard sized valve that will do the same job, therefore, I think you'll have to connect the gas via a regulator, which will, in fact, make the set-up way more expensive.

Honestly, if you live near a stockist, I'd say an S30 valve and the Hambledon Bard cylinder would be the easiest and cheapest way to go.

I used pressure barrels with a CO2 cylinder for a couple of years (before switching to cornies to save space). I use a pub-size 6.35kg cylinder, with a standard welding reg. I would be concerned about using a PB connected to a cylinder without a gauge to check the outlet pressure.

The max recommended pressure for a barrel is 10 to 15 psi. A cylinder or reg will output much higher pressure (but I can't speak for aquarium regs). The S30 valve has an inlet valve rubber, designed to take a short burst of high pressure from an S30 cylinder. That might enable other cylinders, like the sodastream, to be used in short bursts, much like the S30 is. I always used a constant low pressure in the PBs, but either way, I'd want a gauge to tell me the pressure in the barrel.
Cheers,
Chris

Hi Rob

I'm based in Chamonix, France, so this rig seems the ideal set up for me. The sodastream cylinders are readily available here. Wondered if you might be able to help with a couple of questions....

The CO2 regulator states it "works with 4mm or 6mm tubing" - does this sound like it has changed since you bought it or do you reckon I'll still need the 4mm to 6mm adapter bits?

I have 6 barrels. Can I use the rig to dose each one with occasional bursts of CO2 as with the sparklets or do I need to leave the rig connected to a single barrel all the time?

Thanks for any advice :)

If the site says that, they must have changed the product. The hoses and adaptor are pretty cheap. I guess it a case of buying the 4mm plus adaptor if you need. Is the site giving both internal and external diameters of the hose though? These would be 4mm & 6mm,

You'd have to decide what to do. You could put an adaptor on each barrel then find a quick release connector to use one cylinder when needed. The alternative is one adaptor, which you'd need to unscrew and screw back on each time, which would be do-able, just a bit stiff.

Edit: I see they now consider homebrewers. They didn't when I bought my stuff.

The S30 valve has an inlet valve rubber, designed to take a short burst of high pressure from an S30 cylinder.
You'd have to remove that valve rubber to provide a constant low pressure, but that would prevent your S30 valve from sealing. Makes a short burst more feasible. No need to remove the adaptor, just turn the reg on for a short burst, then off after use. Much the same as topping-up from an S30 cylinder with a short burst before removing the cylinder.
Cheers,
Chris

Yes, I suppose I should have made that clear.
I give the barrel a short burst of gas when needed. I can't amend my post, unfortunately.

I think it's a good method. I do much the same with a fire extinguisher for a CO2 cylinder to gas-up kegs. My welding type reg has an output pressure cylinder, tho', so I can repeat burts until I get the desired pressure.

Chris

Ah...you were right in the first place. Internal and external diameters quoted

I've orderd all the kit. Delivery to France for all of it was the same as for the UK :)

Looking forward to saying goodbye to the 8g CO2 cylinders!!!

Thanks again Rob!

Kit assembled with no problems at all!

The set up works brilliantly. Only have to screw onto the barrels finger tight in order to add pressure so easy to swap between several barrels.

Really nice to be able to use the CO2 regulator to add gradual amounts of pressure - I can even do this whilst pouring!

All in all a huge improvement over the CO2 bulbs when you live somewhere without access to HB cylinders.

Big thank you to HebridesRob!
