Hello everyone! New to the forum and my first post here, just looking for some advice for what will be just my second brew. My first brew was a 1Gal Punk IPA kit from Brooklyn Brew Shop. Going forward I want to do BIAB as I think it’ll suit me perfectly for my equipment and size of working space (a kitchen).

For my first proper brew I’d like to do a SMaSH Citrus Pale Ale, and have come up with the following for what I’d like to achieve. My question is; how do I go about calculating just how much malt and hops I require for this? If somebody could help me out that would be fantastic. For my water volumes I believe I can pump figures into the BIABacus spreadsheet or Beersmith2? It’s just calculating my ingredients that I can’t get my head around, as well as when to add certain amounts of hops. This will also be a 1Gal or 3.8L Batch. Cheers!

Pale Malt / Marris Otter
Citra Pellet Hops (100g Bag)
Wyeast 1056 / S-05

Target IBU: 40
Target OG: 1.045
Target FG: 1.011
Target ABV: 4.5%
 
Yeah your best bet is to pump some numbers into one of the tools (I use the "beer Shop" app) and play around until they seem about right.

Do you mean you will end up with a 1 gal (3.8l) batch after boil? If so I worked out based on a roughly 5l boil volume that 1kg of maris otter would be just about right. if you are boiling 3.8l (which seems pretty small) then about 750g to 800g.

No idea how you want it to taste but I'd be inclined to hold back on the hops, something like:
5g @ 60min
5g @ 15min

then a bit more (maybe 10g?) at flame-out and then a dry-hop? Hopefully someone can offer better advice as I am more used to brewing at a larger scale, and just scaling down doesn't always work exactly.

Alsch890; indeed i'd like a 3.8L (1Gal) batch going in to my fermenter which is just the standard glass carboy. Should give me about 3.5L of beer, ten bottles or thereabouts. Not a lot I know, but I want to start slow and get the hang of things initially. As for the hops, I mistakenly left the "100g bag" on there from my notes, that's just the quantity that my local home-brew shop sell it in haha, wasn't planning on putting all that in this brew! Cheers guys.
 
I would aim for 4 litres or even 4.2 litres because you will loose some in the trub and you will want to take a sample for the SG.
 
Yeah, no worries I thought that was the case. I do that myself all the time on my recipes. List at the top what I actually have and then start from there, wait till you have half a dozen half full bags of hops and the list is like 40g of this, 60 of that, 25g of mt hood etc. :-)

Awesome thanks. Considering a purchase of Beersmith, just a trial version at the moment - Is it a one off price or yearly sub or something.

Love it, this is a perfect example of different peoples approaches and yet an almost identical result. I was pushing for a slightly higher OG in case of less efficiency so bumped up to 1kg from around 800g originally. :-)
The same with the IBUs from the first addition.
 
How'd it go? I love the smell of Citra, pineapples and grapefruit, totally tropical. I dry hoped one of my rubbish brews and it turned it around!

Brew Day went perfectly. As I said I went BIAB, and it went very smoothly. I went with 1KG of Marris Otter and 4G of Citra at the start of the boil, 5G with 20mins remaining and 8G and flameout/whirlpool. It’s been in the fermenter 1 week today, and is smelling great. My estimated pre-boil gravity from BeerSmith came out much higher than anticipated and my estimated OG was 1.050 and I came out with 1.052, so a little better efficiency than I had expected.
