I have chronic sinus problems and every time I kite-surf or brew beer it seems that I get a sinus infection. Very annoying since they are my two top hobbies. Thought it was the hops but it seems it could be the malt dust? I went to the local brew club's brew session two weeks ago, had planned to leave before the guys starting throwing the hops in but my nose got stuffy like crazy before there was too much hops in the air. The next day I had a sinus infection. Now I am on antibiotics. Anyone else have this problem?

I have taken an allergy test and it said I had some allergic tendencies but the test did not really indicate that I was in the allergy range for any of all the items tested. I think I was on the allergy border for Mugwort. Mugwort can be used as an alternative to hops in beer brewing but that is something I would not try.

Not sure if I should wear a mask or a swimmer's nose clip or something. Had the same problem even when I was brewing outside. Drinking beer does not have the same effect on me as brewing it :) Planning to brew soon so have to come up with a plan :)

Best Regards,

Jo'

How about brewing an extract brew? that'll show if it's the grain or not

Hahaha, yes I was thinking about Breaking Bad when first considering wearing a mask.

Btw, I will ask my surf buddies if they want to have a combined brew and surf session. One of them has a 100 litre pot that is fired by wood that we could set up by the parking lot at the local surf spot. Surf a little while waiting for water to boil. Come up, have some tea, dough in and go for another quick surf while mashing in a cooler box. Haha.

Thought someone else had similar issues with sinuses and brewing. Have bought all the malts and hops but reluctant to brew while still having sinus problems since last session.

I have a friend with horrendous sinus infection problems. Antibiotics don't usually clear it but he has found that drinking a couple teaspoons of asphal cider vinegar dissolved in water a day works a treat! Try googling it.... Just thought I'd share as it's changed his life!

SWMBO suffers randomly, so good read

As a former windsurfer I have no sympathy for somebody who uses a tea tray with a kite on the water! ;)

Seriously though, a nose clip might help a little out on the ocean, but probably not much, and a builders mask might help whilst brewing.

Haha It's brilliant that someone has made a connection between brewing, kite surfing and sinus problems HTF (how the ****)!?! pure breaking bad that is :)

It may not be remotely related but I follow most peoples' advice to use a plant mister with my star-san - I find this gives me all sorts of nasal pain while I'm brewing. Maybe I'm creating too much spray but if you're doing a similar technique maybe try a work around and see if this helps things?
