Reaper is great, I just started using it after many years of using Ableton Live and it's pretty intuitive. I haven't tried Guitar Rig yet but I've been quite enjoying Bias FX 2, although I've been struggling to get a really good recording tone on the 8 string. Are you lucky enough to have a drummer or are you using programmed drums? I've got some surprisingly good drum sounds with MT Power drumkit which is a free plugin.

I'm enjoying this thread! I studied music at uni, bass being my main instrument. I don't play as much as I used to but still really appreciate a good musical instrument chat.

I started playing guitar when I was 13 (almost 20 years ago now), my cousin got me this:

It's an Aslin Dane. I've actually never heard of it before or since. Some Fender rip off but it's really been worn in now and feels amazing to play! I changed the middle pickup to a hot rail some time back. In the process I did something to the electrics, it's either on or off, no sorts of volume control!

My pride and joy! Fender USA Jazz. I spent a good part of my student loan on it. Who needs food when you can have a bass?

It's a 2008 model. At the time I bought it I tried out a bunch of basses, this one felt so natural to play.

These days I'm playing this most the time:

A Fender acoustic I found in a cupboard at my in-laws. It's a nice guitar, sounds best in D standard.

I've had quite a few other guitars over the years but had to get rid of some due to lack of space and not playing them. I had a Washburn Force 4, a really nice budget type bass. I had a fretless for a bit but traded it for something else.

MuLAB is also worth a try, that’s what I use. You can try it for free and it’s a tiny program that doesn’t need installed, you can run it from a USB stick but very powerful and most of all, intuitive.

My plan is to use the keyboard for doing the drums - the keyboard has got tens of thousands of different voices on it. I plan to do the guitar parts first to a metronome app I think. This is how the keyboard sounds with Reaper was just a mess about when I was trying to get the audio interface set up

I've three to my name.

1973 Fender Strat, bought for £100 when i was 15. Originally tobacco sunburst, a previous owner decided to sand it down and paint it an awful white colour. Classic fender tones typical of the era, the toggle is a 3-way but you can get a balance point between 1&2 to get the quack sound. I've had the neck refurbished and a new nut and bridge installed to make it playable.


A self-build strat, Swamp ash body, 3 single-rail humbuckers which can be tapped using the corresponding vol or tone pots. Very playable, humbucking tones much better than single coil, but tapping the middle pickup in position 2 gives the best funk sound of any of the three. Now adopted by my 17yr old, along with my Blackstar HT-1.


Most recent acquisition, an Ibanez Prestige RG 3770 FZ. Same spec as the Jem-custom of its day and also Japanese made. DiMarzo pickups, Edge-Zero trem and 5 piece neck. My playing might have did it some justice at the time of purchase but excluding a minor resurgence of interest at the start of lockdown, I've let things slip considerably since then.

Took the four I pictured to the local luthier this morning. The fake Gibson needs a new switch as does the Epiphone. Having setups done on the Epi, the Fender and the Bass. I tried my best with the bass action but I'm sure it needs some nut work so this guy is cheap and far better to sort it than any attempt of mine.

Think the bass will turn out to be a ridiculous steal for the money when it comes back it plays nicely apart from one string buzzing when played open.

Never bought a guitar but i have made quite a few, Cigar box & biscuit tin jobs, actually i lost count now, think i must have a disease.
View attachment 29760 One on the left is the first one i built & still my favorite, Pitch pine neck that came out of Benfleet creek 45 years ago, Honduras mahogany fretboard from a Barclays bank counter top. Cigar boxes came from the Ritz casino in London where they used to give boxes away to the high rollers, A friend who worked there used to save the boxes & bring them home, He gave me a sackful of them. No 2 is 28" scale fretless, No 3 a two string chugger & last one a Kiwi tin diddlybo all came out of a skip.
All have rod piezo pickups with pre amps.

Finally got my recording setup done months later than planned - had a quick go at an intro. Got the rest of the week off and have quite a bit to do around brewing and sorting the garage out but got the guitar sounding like this recorded with Reaper as a trial run

Also have but not photographed, Epi Explorer with EMG81/85 pups, Washburn Dimebag thingy, MiJ Squier Strat which is a lovely thing but needs a bit of TLC, Faith Venus Eclipse acoustic, Yamaha 12 string acoustic, some sparkly Squier Showmaster that the wife insisted I buy... maybe more, I can't remember.

Live I currently use a little Marshall DSL15 head which is great. Much more fun than lugging around my '83 JCM800.

Not really, I like them, but I have the Thunderbird because of a fella I like called Toshi who is currently playing with the Professionals whom I like very much. He's done a few things with my musical hero, Ginger Wildheart. And let's face it, it's a welcome change to the millions of J and P basses you see... Very neck heavy tho, it really doesn't balance well.

The Ibanez is in the collection because I'm a huge Kiss fan.

If you look at my post above, you'll probably see I rather like J basses . I remember playing an Epiphone Thunderbird years ago and I quite liked it, very hot pickups from what I remember.

Kiss is a band who've influenced a lot of my favourite artists but I've never really got into myself. The Melvins covered Going Blind which I really liked, both versions.

I've got a thunderbird. Great neck, great pick-ups & great sound. Bloody cumbersome tho. I only play at home sitting down, so my right elbow rests on the pointy bit and balances the heavy neck and head. I don't play in a band any more and couldn't imagine trying to get through a set with it. It still puts a smile on my face tho.
